A welcoming family house – a palpable feel – a memorable aesthetic. This is how Richard Sherer recalls his clients’ vision of a “legacy estate” on Pine Lake in Chenequa, Wisconsin. “When we first meet a client, we go through an extensive discovery . . . trying to figure out what their main goals are and what are the words that they’re using to describe their vision,” says Richard, CEO and founder of Deep River Partners, a residential architecture and interior design firm in Milwaukee. The clients wanted a large primary residence to accommodate family gatherings as well as formal and informal entertaining — something that would endure for generations. What’s more, to fit their historic property — an original farmstead on Pine Lake before its development — they wanted…
Rancho Puerta del Cielo, translation: “Heaven’s Gate.” It’s a fitting name for this 69-acre vineyard estate in California’s majestic Napa Valley. It is, indeed, a divine expression of a simple truth — home is much more than a physical place in a given moment in time. It is a shared experience where the past, present and future all converge. This philosophy is woven into every aspect of the property’s design, creating a space that not only revels in a spectacular aesthetic, it also simultaneously embraces a recognition of the past and an anticipation for the future. Far from abstract, this approach invites the homeowners and their guests to immerse themselves into present, tangible moments. HONORING THE PAST A cursory glimpse of the residence reveals the unmistakable influence of the past.…

Encompassed by sweeping mountain vistas and endless azure skies, the house respects its place in the vast landscape yet asserts itself with fitting scale and exquisite organic materials. It’s the epitome of what every mountain home aspires to be — a rare paradigm where the natural world and a human creation can exist in harmony. DESIGN AT THE CENTER Striking this delicate balance is the root of the home’s design. “With a project like this, you want to capture the majesty of the landscape and…

To capture the rustic refinement of New York’s beloved Lake Placid Lodge — that was the challenge presented to principal architect Cris Salomon of Samyn-D’Elia Architects. His canvas? A 100-acre tract in the White Mountains of New Hampshire where he could bring the iconic grandeur of the Great Camps back to life. “The homeowners wanted to re-create a getaway they had at the lodge and translate the same feelings and experiences at their own retreat,” explains Cris. “The home focuses greatly on the views, and each detail was considered to mimic the style of the Adirondacks down to the stick work on the balusters.” FOCUS ON THE VIEWS A sense of place drove the design. Cris started by taking a walk across the property with the owner, crisscrossing the parcel…
