A year ago, as we were mapping our editorial themes for 2022, we most definitely had rest and relaxation in mind for this, our “R&R Retreat” issue. But during the past few weeks, as we pulled each individual article together into a cohesive magazine and the big picture began to emerge, designer Edie Mann pointed out that, within these pages, “R&R” stands for so much more. For starters, R&R could translate as “Reassess & Retire.” After years of living in traditional types of houses, both our Reader’s Spotlight couple, Kelley and Gary Uvanni, and Debbie and Tim Werner, whose home is featured in “Time Will Tell,” were more than ready to lay their forever homes roots in log and timber land. Vacation-home ownership is a goal on many a bucket list, and it can be a smart investment. There’s an advantage to having a consistent, comfortable place to unwind, not to mention potential tax advantages and rental opportunities. If you’re hoping to build a second home as a vacation retreat, what are your objectives? Is your first priority quality of life and getting the most out of your private getaway? Or is your aim to build a simple place to visit every now and then, and do it at the lowest possible cost? Don’t misunderstand me — there’s nothing wrong with either approach. Whether your cabin is a weekend getaway, a primary residence or you simply don’t have the time or enthusiasm for yard work (who does?), you may think you need to sacrifice beauty for easy upkeep. Good news: You don’t. While it will take a little upfront effort to establish a low-to no-maintenance landscape, ultimately you can get an eye-catching look without spending your vacation days or hard-earned retirement years on gardening tasks. Here are six quick tips to do now, so you can take it easy later on: ■ Spotlight shrubs and small trees: There’s a reason you see so many trees, shrubbery and decorative grasses at vacation properties; they’re hearty and require minimal trimming. Plus, many are drought resistant, which means you don’t need to worry about a watering…
For the moment, the Septa Lodge is the Adirondack getaway of Kelley and Gary Uvanni. Full of authentic decor dedicated to local history and located 40 miles west of the Uvannis’ primary home in Syracuse, New York, the lodge occupies a quiet piece of land among the 6 million acres spanning the Adirondack Mountains. And while it’s the couple’s summer home now, this rustic retreat sits ready for the day when Kelley and Gary retire. Kelley: If you’re not familiar with the Adirondacks, they’re in central New York. There are 46 high peaks, primarily around Lake Placid; we’re just south of there. We built this place three years ago, and it’s our third home up here. (Third time is the charm!) We started with a log home 15 years ago,…
The past few years haven’t been a picnic, to say the least, and although we’ve started to integrate into society more each day, we still look to our homes to provide a safe space for work and play. If you’re still seeking out your ideal retreat, you’re not alone. Log and timber home designers say today’s buyers are specifically looking for homes that rejuvenate and replenish their spirits, with amenities that can support family life and help them reconnect with friends. The reasons range from the practical (housing an aging parent or earning passive income) to playful (adding a boat house on a lake, a yoga studio or a game room), and two of the tactics that can help accomplish these goals happen to be log and timber home trends…
