dpeak@aimmedia.com When I was young, I, like every red-blooded American kid, looked to my future as if it were an infinite sky. Filled with hopes and dreams (and a healthy dash of trepidation), it felt like I had all the time in the world to check items off my “ultimate to-do list.” But despite all its promises, life has a funny habit of getting in the way. You grow older, and suddenly you realize how important it is to seize every moment, every opportunity. Before you know it, that “ultimate to-do list” turns into a bucket list, and you wonder, “How long am I going to wait?” The goal of “owning a log home one day” is a sentiment I hear from readers and Log & Timber Home Show attendees…
The Great Wide Open: Delicate wrought-iron touches are fortified by thick half-log stair treads and a longhorn mount above the door in this open two-story foyer. Good Natured: Burled-wood newel posts, twig balusters and flagstone flooring make an organic, natural first impression in this small-scale entry. Set in Stone: Free from furnishings to maximize the space, this entryway’s dramatic flair is the wood inlay in the stone-tile floor.…
The frontier log cabin is an American icon, with no less than seven U.S. presidents claiming one as their birthplace, the most recognized of these being Abraham Lincoln, of course. But it wasn’t until the latter half of the 19th century when the Great Camps of the Adirondack Mountains and their grandiose cabins reawakened a hunger for this rustic style of construction. “The log homes industry grew organically, rising with consumer demand for this unique style of housing,” says Josh Beasley, president of Honest Able Log Homes and the 2017 chairman of the Log and Timber Homes Council, part of the National Association of Home Builders. Founded 40 years ago, the Council was formed to help insert the log home industry into mainstream construction and help educate building code officials…
At the 2017 International Builders’ Show in Orlando — the largest gathering of builders, manufacturers and suppliers in North America — Canadian manufacturer True North Log Homes was selected as a “Global Innovation Finalist for the World’s First Machine Coated Prefinished Logs for Log Homes.” The prestigious award recognizes the company’s patented “StainLock Infusion System,” which actually infuses the stain into the surface of the logs to increase longevity and significantly reduce time, labor and cost. “Our StainLock Infusion System is a first in the industry,” says Robert A. Wrightman, CEO of True North Log Homes. “Historically, staining is done on site, which means the work is weather dependent, quality can be marred applicator inexperience and often it requires considerable site-prep work. Our system eliminates all of this, as the…
GARDEN CITY, INDIANA, has been keeping a secret for 200 hundred years. What seemed to be a small, insignificant structure primed for demolition was, in actuality, a 20-by-26-foot chestnut log cabin masked behind siding. Once plentiful in the U.S., chestnut suffered a devastating blight in the early 1900s and is now a rare species for home building, which adds value beyond mere historical novelty to this find. The cabin’s logs were hand-hewn with dovetailed corners and were in exceptionally good condition. With permission from the property’s owner, Dennis Parman, owner of Peaceful Valley Construction (peacefulvalleyconstruction.com) in Nashville, disassembled the cabin and intends to build a beautiful new log home from the reclaimed wood.
