dpeak@aimmedia.com As a mother, you’re not supposed to play favorites among your children. Fortunately, I have only one daughter, so she can be my darling all day long (though sometimes she does suffer a little bit of competition from the family Chihuahua). But as the editor of Log Home Living, I feel as though every issue brings with it a new “child” to raise. After all, I’ve conceived its theme and article topics, nurtured it through its growing pains as each story comes to fruition, watched it take on its own personality as we bring the text and photos together and then we proudly send it out into the world. I believe I can say this without too much parental guilt: If I had to choose between my beloved paper-and-ink…

At the 2017 International Builder’s Show (IBS), the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) bestowed its 2017 NAHB Global Innovation Award to Timber Block for its R-36 patented home building technology, a panelized system that significantly exceeds building codes. Each year, the NAHB Global Innovation Award recognizes the most cutting-edge, advanced residential construction solution. An independent panel of judges selected finalists based on design, functionality, innovation and usefulness to the builder and consumer. “It is a great honor to be recognized by the authority in the housing industry for our innovative energy-saving homes,” says Parker McGee, national construction manager and the spokesperson for the Timber Block team who accepted the award. Timber Block staff believes their system won the award because it pushes the industry benchmark to another level of…
Wes Seeley knows a thing or two about eagles. Growing up on Quadra Island, a small isle off of British Columbia’s Vancouver Island, where he now resides, eagle sightings are as common to Wes as robins are to the rest of us. Throughout his life, he’s spent time watching these majestic birds; studying their behavior and letting his imagination soar. But it wasn’t until five years ago that this selftaught carver decided it was time to capture their beauty in wood. “Ever since I was small, I was always carv ing things, like little sailboats,” Wes says. “I love woodwork and I love eagles, so I thought I’d combine the two. It’s been so much fun to try to represent what Mother Nature has given them — they’re such amazing…
Fritz Allen took the risk of his life, launching his new venture, The Copper Shower Co., on the biggest stage in the business: The Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS). That gamble really paid off, as he took home the Best of KBIS “Silver Award” in the bath category for his totally innovative shower enclosure system. This DIY kit includes all the copper panels, trim and galvanized metal needed to completely enclose and waterproof your shower. Available in a variety of different shapes and finishes, from rounded with an acid-washed patina (shown) to flat and shiny as a penny, you can create the look you want in no time (Fritz’s 13-year-old daughter installed a standard-shower configuration in hours.) And, unlike porcelain tile, the snap-in panels can be easily removed and…
Our house is quickly transitioning from a construction zone to a home. For my wife, Amanda, and I (as I’m sure is the case with many of you), achieving the perfect kitchen is important. Of course, our plans changed quite a bit from our lofty dreams at the start, as the reality of available budget came into very stark view. In fact, in the end we managed to get all of our appliances to total less than the refrigerator I had envisioned originally. And though it’s fun to dream big, we found out that reality can be just as satisfying. So I wanted to share the steps we went through to find the kitchen that would form the core of our home, with a nod towards keeping the budget in…
