It’s a commonly held belief that the kitchen is the heart of the home. I suppose I subscribe to that philosophy; after all, so much of life happens in this room. It’s where I help my daughter with her science fair projects and bandage her scrapes when she falls off her bike. It’s the place where friends congregate every time they come over. And I can whip up a mean “short rib chili on a bed of creamy polenta” in here. But today’s kitchen is more than the heart – it’s the also the brain trust. I check my email and pay my bills from the island while I sip my coffee. I do math … lots and lots of 5th grade math … from the same spot. With the…
When it comes to facing challenges, few do it better than veterans who have put their lives in jeopardy and sacrificed time with family to serve on the front lines for our country. Retired Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Vincent Gizzarelli and his family are among the many that have experienced a trying journey of highs and lows. Coupled with Vince’s service and the struggles the family experienced after his retirement, the Gizzarellis couldn’t be more deserving of the custom-built, mortgage-free log and timber home they received from the National Association of Home Builders’ Building Systems Councils (BSC) and national nonprofit Operation FINALLY HOME in April 2012. With two children already, Vince and his wife Jamie took a leap of faith, adopting three young brothers who were being severely abused and…
If you really want to get away from it all and enjoy the breathtaking scenery that Montana has to offer, head to The North Fork. Located only a mile from Glacier National Park and three miles from the Canadian border, this small community largely operates off of generators and solar power, with no cell phone reception for miles. “That’s exactly why we chose to build here,” said Bill, the owner of this stunning three-level log home. But, what attracted Bill and his wife Luann to the area is also what created a unique challenge for builder Scott Leigh. “To get to the site, we had to drive 60 miles up a gravel road, sometimes in terrible weather, and then have no cell phone reception the entire time we were there,”…
As you feast your eyes on this undeniably rustic retreat set in New England’s White Mountains, you’d never guess that its owners also have a sophisticated Tuscan-themed home in sunny Florida. After all, the two house styles — and their locations — are about as different as night and day. “We knew that our home in the mountains had to be log,” shares homeowner Bill Dawson. “It’s drastically different from our Florida home and from prior, more traditional homes we’ve lived in. We wanted to combine the natural feel of logs with modern amenities and higher-end details to create a true 21stcentury home.” A quick glance at this rugged-yet-elegant house reveals meticulous attention to detail, an artful mix of sophisticated touches and a very rustic flavor. Set on two pristine…
Every year, members of the home building industry come together for the International Builders’ Show (IBS) and Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) to exchange ideas, discuss design trends and new building techniques and, my favorite part, unveil new products. The exhibit hall is massive beyond imagination with hundreds of manufacturers from fasteners to faucets showing off their wares. This year, I made it my mission to scour the show for the latest log-home-worthy kitchen trends and bring them back to you. As I visited with companies and spoke with designers, a few concepts popped up repeatedly, and now it's my pleasure to share what I learned with you. TOP 10 KITCHEN TRENDS OF 2016 The National Kitchen and Bath Association has been tracking trends for the past 53 years.…
