GET THE LAY OF THE LAND
Not all land can be built on. If you buy 40 acres with one hilltop that you figure is the only worthwhile spot to build, make sure you can build there. If not, you may have to settle for another, less desirable site or even consider another lot.
In a more general sense, the general region where you buy your land may suggest a certain style of log home. Hewn-log homes are popular in the mid-Appalachian mountains but uncommon in New England, where round logs are the rule. Big handcrafted logs are the style in the wide-open spaces of the West. Smaller, milled logs hold sway in the East.
