I visited Indonesia as part of a group in May 1977. The originality of the programme was that a major part of transportation in Java was by train. In addition I was able to take free time to visit some places of interest for a railway fan. Everywhere we were granted a friendly welcome and everyone did his best to fulfill all our wishes. I was invited in the cab of the diesel locomotive all along the section from Jakarta and Bandung. In Bandung, I was able to visit the locomotive workshop which was very interesting in spite of difficult communication, none of the railwaymen present being able to speak more than few words of English. An apparent almost binding rule in Chilean State Railways (EFE) locomotive policy was that no type of locomotive should have driving wheels of a diameter greater than 5´6”, which, by coincidence, was the gauge of the Southern Network (RS) main line and of many of its branches. There was not really much point in having bigger wheels, since most of the main lines were single tracked and occupied by both fast and slow passenger trains and even slower freight trains, all worked in both directions. When the decision was taken to create a railway on Corsica, Bastia was chosen as the operating base because it is there that the administrative offices and workshops could be found. In 1979, Bastia’s railway importance was greatly reduced with the removal of the workshop, which was moved 21km to Casamozza. The management offices were also demolished along with the station and a new building was erected as a replacement. Only the depot was maintained for routine maintenance of daily trains. The depot was built in the mid-1880s, for entry into service on February 1st, 1888 when the network from Bastia to Corte and from Bastia to Tallone opened. It was permanently destroyed because of poor general condition and lack of use, it has been less important for many years.…

Borsig of Berlin - Part 2, Issue 137 Mike Lane writes: Page 28 top photo, No 781 was the last of the batch 772-781 Borsig 8943-52, they later became Southern Railway 1772-1781 & finally BR 31772-31781. The Beyer Peacock locos were 760-771 BP 5824-5835/14, SR 1760-1771 & BR 31760-31771. In 1926 the Southern ordered 15 very similar locos class L1 1753-1759/1782-1789 NBL 23356-23370/26, later BR 31753-31759/31782-31789. Page 29 bottom photo, the loco pictured is numbered 83 not 55 and is a 4-6-0 not a 2-6-0 and is not even remotely like the Norte loco described. Readers will almost certainly know about the history of how Berlin evolved after 1945, but a very brief summary. The city was divided into four sectors: British, French, US and Soviet. The first three then became ‘West Berlin’ and the Soviet sector ‘East Berlin’. During the early period, there was the famous ‘Berlin Airlift’ for eleven months in 1948/49, when land connections to West Berlin were severed by the Soviets before matters returned to normal. But later, overnight on 12/13th August 1961, a barbed wire fence went up around West Berlin, effectively making it an island within East Germany (DDR). In looking at the history of this town and its railways, it is necessary to go back to the early to mid-Victorian era. The town area was surveyed by John Turnbull Thomson in 1858 and grew into the attractive colonial style town that we know today and was settled by Europeans over the following decades of those Victorian times. A lot of the town had been built by the mid-1880s and in the previous years had also seen a major port built between the years 1871 and 1884, (which didn’t cease commercial shipping operations until 1974); additionally, the South Island Main Trunk (SIMT) railway line opened in a northerly direction to Christchurch on 1st February 1877. When a Chinese friend discovered that I was returning to visit China on 27 December 2014, she, with her husband and son, met me at Beijing Capital Airport early in the morning, where we had breakfast together. We then got in their car and drove into the city of Beijing but did not tell me where we were going, so it came as a huge surprise to me when we pulled up at the China Railway Museum!! The 3’ gauge (914 mm) railways of Donegal have always cast a spell over railway enthusiasts. Even though the remaining network was closed back on 01.01.1960, it is still very much alive.
