In particular the siege of Khartoum and the subsequent death of General Charles Gordon of the Royal Engineers in January 1885, and the Dongola Campaign of 1897-98 headed by General Sir Herbert Kitchener which brought about the final defeat of the Mahdiyya are well-known episodes in history. It is against this backdrop that the first railway in Sudan was constructed. Author 11th October 1979 was hot and mostly overcast in the north of Ecuador. Our group of 12 British photographers had completed three days of chasing steam on the “Devil’s Nose” section of the Ecuador state railways. It was our last day in Ecuador, and we decided to take some final pictures of 2-6-0 No.14, Baldwin of 1901, with its train of clerestory coaches on the 12.15 Bucay – Duran. Trains on this flat coastal stretch travel remarkably fast for 3 ft. 6 in. gauge and we only got one good shot before Milagro. Here the trains ran right down the middle of the dusty main street, in a scene straight out of 1920s America. It was now time to head back towards Guayaquil for our flights home. The main…

Sagay is a relatively new mill built in 1969 compared to the 1920s for the classical American style mills that dominate the rest of Negros. It was built alongside the ILCO main line and shared the use of its tracks. On the demise of ILCO in this region c1976 Sagay inherited ILCO’s steam locos, the bulk of which remained dumped at Sagay, Sagay being a purely diesel operation. If I may mention one of them, it would also be to the Erzbergbahn, on Mon.27th and Tue.28th February 1978. The line had been completely dieselised in the week prior to our arrival but, (un)fortunately, two of the 2043 class locos had collided at Vordernberg on Fri.24th, putting them temporarily out of action. All photographs by the Author Tatvan is a large city in Eastern Turkey, nestling on the western shore of Lake Van, by far the largest lake in Turkey. Tatvan’s connection to the Turkish railway system was not made until 1964 following the completion of a line from Elazig, 334km to the west. It was part of the route from Istanbul via Ankara to Teheran, finally completed in 1971. A train ferry across Lake Van linking the two sections was to be just temporary awaiting a line around the lake – which never came. Tatvan was little more than a sleepy Turkish town when I visited in 1977, the busiest places seemed to be the street corner tea and shisha houses. These machines are mainly what fell in front of the camera and do not form a definitive list. All photographs by the Author Despite the ongoing impact of the Covid19 pandemic, there were three major highlights for the museum in 2021, each with wide-ranging and significant effects. Firstly, the visit of President Julius Maada Bio in April brought the museum to the attention of both politicians and the general public, leading to improved investment in the museum infrastructure and enabling the development of the first School Railway Heritage Club, at St Peter’s Junior Secondary School in Bauya, the site of the junction between the main line from Freetown to Pendembu and the branch to Makeni in the north. All photographs by Christopher Smith 1967 proved to be an influential year for Sweden’s trams. There were thirteen towns with tram networks in Sweden but in 1967 the country’s change from driving on the left, to the right, meant many networks had to close. Facing uneconomical costs to convert rails and rolling stock to the changed priorities, many simply closed. Today, only three systems remain in the country; Stockholm, Lund (a new system only just opened on 13th December 2020) and the extensive system within Sweden’s second largest city, Gothenburg. Opened on the 24th September 1879, the metre gauge tramway featured horse drawn vehicles built and operated by a UK company. Quickly proving to be a success, the city bought the system in 1900. Part 1 covers the history of the building of the Langbian Railway, which includes the rack-and-pinion sections up to Dalat, and it incorporates timetables as the line progressively opened. In addition, a press report is included about the inauguration of the first rack-and-pinion section which describes the journey taken all the way from Saigon and gives an insight into what a passenger from Saigon would have experienced on their journey and the sense of the occasion. All photographs by the Author The writer has recently come into the possession of an original photo album containing privately-made pictures of great historical importance. Dated to 1931, the album records the dispatch of new steam locomotives and tenders from the Borsig Locomotive Works in Berlin to railway companies in British India. The album has been found to be of such high value that it inspired the writer to publish this review of the German locomotive manufacturer’s history. A few more Borsig photos are also provided, for a broader view of the company’s wide range of steam locomotives. Dübs locos in Spain / Chile Ian Thomson-Newman writes: Various researchers, such as Paul Copeland, John Kirchner, Martín Coombes and myself, have concluded that, in 1891, Dübs and Co, Ltd., of Glasgow, produced three, or possibly four, 0 6 0Ts, serial numbers between 2742 and 2746, for a client from Spain, now identified as the Parcocha Iron Ore Railway. The latter decided not to go ahead with its railway project and hence the locomotives were offered for sale. The conventional wisdom of the said señores concluded that they were acquired, in 1894 or 1896, by Chilean State Railways, where they were numbered 219 to 221.
