War is hell, and so is making movies. The outlaw beatnik Cameron (Steve Railsback) manages to evade a local police dragnet by hiding out on the set of a prestige World War Two epic, directed by the perfectionist tyrant Eli Cross (Peter O’Toole). More specifically, Cameron accepts a dodgy role replacing a dead stunt man, and his past as a grunt in Vietnam – dodging bullets, falling from buildings, fist fights, derring-do – makes him perfect for the roughhousing required. Richard Rush’s 1980 cult item is one part First Blood, as it explores the way veterans are treated when they return from war, and one part Antonioni’s The Passenger, a more coolly intellectual study of what it means to…
