A Gentle Woman, Robert Bresson’s first film in colour, is probably also his least seen production. An adaptation of a Fyodor Dostoevsky short story, it opens by showing, through a cascade of careful compositions of the type the director was renowned for, a young woman (Dominique Sanda) jumping off a balcony. The film then traces events that lead up to this moment, charting the arrival of this young student to Paris and her meeting with an older man (Guy Frangin), a banker turned pawnbroker, to whom she will become unhappily married.
