Half skate punk, half public intellectual, Harmony Korine emerged in the ’90s as a true iconoclast. He parses together influences and inspirations that range from Buster Keaton, TS Eliot and Tupac Shakur to create worlds that resemble America but actually reveal the warped insides of Korine’s own mind. In 1995, aged nineteen, Korine wrote the screenplay for Larry Clark’s Kids, lurching violently into Hollywood before his brain was fully formed. In 1997, at 21, he directed his first feature, Gummo, a remarkably realised vision that, 30 years on, is still comfortably his greatest film.
