Please enjoy this short survey of Judy Garland’s lesser-known films works, which hopefully fleshes out the iconic persona she developed on the back of a small clutch of all-time classics. We’ve skipped The Wizard of Oz, and A Star Is Born is covered in more depth on page 32. Much of Garland’s early career was comprised of self-assembly contractual obligation comedies which were well loved, but perhaps not the best showcase for her considerable talents. Here we can unearth some of the more burnished jewels in her collection, such as her mad cat animation feature, Gay Purr-ee, and the dazzling musical, Easter Parade. It comprised the journey of her life thus far in song, and it includes the career-defining ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow,’ favourites from Meet Me in St Louis, and ‘You Made Me Love You (I Didn’t Want to Do It).’ She sang a personalised version of the latter to Clark Gable at his birthday party in 1937, cementing her reputation as the Next Big Thing. 1 Screen Test, The Parent Trap 1997 It takes 40 seconds for it to become apparent that, even at 10 years old, the girl is special. In her screen test, she is playing one twin – Anne, who is English – and almost-convincingly playing another – Hallie, who was raised in California – and around that 40 second mark, she lets the work show, describing her sister as a “lovely girl” in such a way that the phrase sounds immediately, subtly misshapen in her mouth (“A lah-vley girl,” she trills. While the Macedonian documentary, Honeyland, is unlikely to benefit from that movie’s inexplicable buzz in terms of box office success, it does prompt the viewer to consider the extent to which the little critters deserve our empathy. It is a reflection on the relationship between woman and nature, and it even runs with the Bee Movie dictum that bees can fly because “bees don’t care what humans think”. So let’s get this out of the way up top: La Flor runs at 808 minutes. Which, when you think about it, is around the same length as a single season of prestige television. It’s a comparison worth making because La Flor, despite where it’s likely to end up playing, is about as far removed from any notion of the arthouse cinematic endurance test as it’s possible to get. This elaborate tale of family secrecy and bitter revelation is a gender-swapped remake of Susanne Bier’s 2006 film of the same name. The source material is prime fodder for an engaging tearjerker, but this new film falls flat almost from the word go. In a hurried opening we get a taster of what life is like in India for Isabel (Michelle Williams), a staff member at an orphanage in desperate need of funding. She is a surrogate mother to the children, taking a shine to one boy in…

He cited examples such as Paddington 2 and Hearts Beat Loud as responses to the ongoing state of Western political freefall, imagining a world driven by altruism rather than apathy, where people are generally just and good, and a happy ending is never far away. Some 15 months later the world is still in a state of chaos, but at the movies, stories about the triumph of congeniality in the face of adversity continue to appear. Yet beauty is about to be imperilled as this woman is actually starring in a horror movie. And then it’s quickly revealed that this horror movie is within another movie, where notions of beauty and representation of bodies that don’t fit societal norms will be skewered to delightful effect. Minervini has spoken openly about how close he is to the people he films, and here once more he takes the time to build a genuine, life-long rapport with various citizens of Louisiana and Mississippi. Abbas Kiarostami’s first decade of cinema, long before he enjoyed international acclaim, consisted mostly of several documentaries and educational short films. He approached filmmaking from a background in illustration and graphic design. His affiliation with the pre-Revolutionary Iranian motion picture industry was tenuous at best. But the DNA of these formative years did not dissipate as Kiarostami began to construct feature-length movies. Film critics have a habit, and not an especially good one, of describing biographical performances as a kind of magic trick, a vanishing act. We marvel at the “transformative” process that turns one famous person, for two hours or so, into another. We describe their crafty, makeup-aided mimicry as “uncanny”, a kind of supernatural channeling. And we speak of actors “disappearing” into these roles, as if the true mark of a great performance is our failure to see the artist behind it. It’s a perception that pervades the industry itself, winning glittering prizes on a near-annual basis for highly recognisable actors doing their best to make themselves less so: Gary Oldman’s latex-swaddled Winston Churchill, Meryl Streep’s starched-and-pressed Maggie Thatcher, Rami Malek’s bucktoothed, lip-synching Freddie Mercury. Choose one film to represent the essence of golden-age Hollywood, and George Cukor’s A Star Is Born could well be a contender. There’s the glamour of starpacked, floodlit premieres. There’s the sheer punch of Judy Garland’s own pedal-to-the-floor performance, as the band singer who’s taken up by boozeaddled matinee idol James Mason, and hits the heights while trying to save him from self destruction. Add to that dazzling production numbers, the timeless craft of the Great American Songbook, and brilliantly written melodrama too, where egotism and frailty collide in the high-stakes arena of screen stardom. It’s a film which explores the subject of sexual abuse in the Catholic church, detailing the very recent exposure of Father Bernard Preynat (Bernard Verley), who used his position as a scout master in the 1980s and ’90s to prey on dozens of boys. The sprawling, 13.5-hour La Flor collects six movies – a supernatural suspense story, an espionage thriller, an experimental Jean Renoir remake – and organises them into unified cohesion through one man’s self-assured vision, enacted by a quartet of versatile actresses. Which presumably is exactly the kind of reaction Morris had been hoping for. Perhaps the most damning thing you could say about his long-awaited follow-up is that it’s unlikely to generate similarly polarised headlines. Non-Fiction takes us from movies to novels, this time zeroing in on the inherent narcissism of those who write about and, by extension, earn filthy lucre from the gory details of their private life. His tenure was brief but bore witness to at least two candidates for immortality: “The Ventriloquist’s Dummy”, the unforgettable centerpiece in 1945’s spooky omnibus, Dead of Night, and the 1942 tea cozy/violent siege picture Went the Day Well? which, among other things, served as spiritual forefather to Inglourious Basterds. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1928, he came of age in an era of spiralling commercialism and heady glamour, the latter emanating from the Hollywood dream factory. He was fascinated with the strange and beautiful people he saw up there on the screen. His friend Elaine Baumann said he would write fan letters to celebrities like Truman Capote and Judy Garland. 1 ‘Judy Garland’ by Brad Steiger 1969 The first Garland biography published after her death is also one of the trashiest. Brad Steiger wrote over 100 books on topics ranging from celebrities to UFOs. Judy Garland is not an academic attempt to unpack the star’s legacy, but rather a quickie cash-in written by an eccentric (other titles by Steiger include ‘Haunted Lovers,’ ‘The Werewolf Book,’ and ‘You Will Live Again,’ to name just a few). This book features a section on ‘Judy and the Occult’, including musings on numerology and Garland’s astrological chart. We see her as caretaker to her younger brother Bo (Casper Falck-Løvås) and mentally unstable mother, Astrid (Maria Bonnevie), who is also an artist. Sama is the baby daughter of one-time amateur video journalist Waad Al-Kateab, and she somehow sustains a large grin as the city of Aleppo crumbles around her at the hands of Bashar al-Assad’s oppressive regime which is backed by the Russian military. Every day, Fails rides his skateboard across town and goes to take care of a house that isn’t his own and which he isn’t supposed to have any access to.
