FOREGROUND / RESEARCH For months, the hum of crickets’ delicate chirps has echoed against the cathedral-like acoustics of the Gaggiandre, one of several sites for the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale. The former shipyard between the city’s canals is the setting of an ecological and cultural soundscape, with elements from Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons serving as a backdrop for the native chorus of the endangered Adriatic marbled bush cricket. In addition to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, the crickets’ live performance is also supplemented by ambient audio recordings of fauna from northern Italian wetland environments. Occupying an enclosed 4,800-square-foot courtyard on the grounds of the Espacio de Arte Contemporáneo, a free public art center in Montevideo, Uruguay, Campo Sucio (loosely translated as “dirty field”) is part of a contemporary movement to reveal the concealed dynamics shaping the Uruguayan landscape. The garden brings species from a local ecosystem known as el chircal, characterized by woody shrubs such as Baccharis spicata, to an urban context, framing and drawing attention to a plant palette often derided by the public and neglected by the landscape trade.
