In 2013, after more than a decade of living, studying and working in Melbourne, I had become increasingly haunted by the biologically and psychologically rich contours of Queensland’s Wet Tropics, where I was raised. After previous promising but faltering attempts to develop a photographic project in the region, I set aside a month within which to reabsorb myself in the landscape, via the slow process necessitated by the unwieldy 8x10-inch view camera I was using. This immersion, while reinvigorating to my visual and ecological curiosity, was underpinned by a forlorn sense of the impacts of climate change that were starting to reveal their influence in the region. It’s been a busy few months here at the Landscape Architecture Australia office, with the announcements over June and July of the winners of the state and territory landscape architecture award programs. We warmly congratulate the awarded projects and practices and look forward to the revealing of the national winners at the 2021 International Festival of Landscape Architecture in October. In other exciting news, we’ve expanded our partnership with the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects and are pleased to announce that the publication has been exclusively endorsed as AILA’s official magazine. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the institute. Registered horticulturist Mark Paul, owner and founder of The Greenwall Company, designed and installed a paneled green wall over indoor airconditioning vents at The University of Queensland’s Global Change Institute. Designed to filter air through plants in order to reduce dust and volatile organic compounds, the 70-square-metre walls biologically treat the air in the building and add significant visual amenity. The installation requires minimal maintenance, will become self-sustaining, and can be considered a step in the greater movement toward building models that contribute to the restoration and regeneration of the environment. The building’s existing pond presented Paul with a sustainability challenge: its small size required that a separate recycled water system be used to irrigate the green walls’ upper reaches. Wagon Landscaping is a Paris-based practice with a DIY attitude that combines landscape architecture, construction and gardening. Y3 Garden, St Lucia, Queensland Built on the land of the Turrbal and Yuggera people Dan Young Landscape Architect Prior to the engagement of Dan Young Landscape Architect (DYLA), the garden of the Y3 House in the Brisbane suburb of St Lucia had suffered from a prolonged period of dry conditions, leaving what little remained of the site a dusty digging ground for the client’s two energetic Scottish terriers. The poor quality of the garden’s existing soil necessitated its wholesale removal, giving DYLA the opportunity to develop a new vision for the space. LOYALTY SQUARE, BALMAIN 1996 – 1998 When Oculus began in Australia, we were only a few people, but the office took over my house in Leichhardt entirely. We were consumed with establishing the practice, building a culture, learning how to collaborate and simply surviving financially. The first project that we completed here, won by way of a tender process in 1996, was a small public space on Darling Street, Balmain named Loyalty Square.
