South Brisbane in Victorian times was a working port area. In the laneway just off the main street, a large laundry was run by a Mr Fish, who went on to become the local councillor. The laundry eventually moved across the river, but his name stuck to the laneway that now forms part of Brisbane City Council’s vision to create laneway culture in the city centre. During an afternoon spent yarning at the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape, Aunty Eileen Albert and Jock Gilbert explored the ways that Gunditjmara culture is successfully underpinning the development of sustainable enterprise in a landscape that acknowledges and draws on the past, the present and the future. This article takes the form of that yarn – a circular conversation grounded in place but traversing topics and time in a sometimes non-linear narrative structure. A long time ago, the Ancestral Creator revealed himself with the eruption of Budj Bim. Budj Bim was one of Bunjil’s sons and created the thriving, richly resource-filled country we now call the landscape of Budj Bim. When considering writing about the unique landscape of kunanyi and the practice of Inspiring Place, I was reminded of an essay by Peter Hay, Tasmanian poet and philosopher. In it, Hay professed that the genius loci or sense of place “arises from the aggregated perception of people with a common bond,” forged through deep, shared experiences of a home place as the keeper of collective memory.2 In Hay’s terms, the kunanyi is part of the genius loci of nipaluna/Hobart. HASSELL TRAVELLING SCHOLARSHIP University of Melbourne graduate Hilary Hoggett is the winner of the 2021 Hassell Travelling Scholarship – Robin Edmond Award. Hoggett’s proposal, “Reorienting the Void,” explores the importance of melancholy landscapes and of designing spaces for grief and contemplation that respect cultural nuances. When possible, Hoggett will use the scholarship to travel to Christchurch, New Zealand, to research the impact of the 2011 earthquakes and the role of melancholy landscapes in building community resilience. Longevity of relationships is a cornerstone of listening and respectfully planning with Traditional Owners and their knowledge. Protected areas – lands and waters ostensibly dedicated to the protection of the world’s ecological and cultural heritage – can be found across 235 countries, often forming the “backbone” of conservation systems. Their origins began in the United States with the world’s first national park at Yellowstone in 1872. Perhaps lesser known is the fact that the renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted was responsible for their creation. In 1865, Olmsted visited Yosemite and penned Yosemite and the Mariposa Grove: A Preliminary Report, 1865, which led to the protection of Yosemite (technically as a state park) and the gazettal of Yellowstone through the enactment of the United States Statutes at Large in 1872.…

After graduating from UNSW, I spent a decade or so working in Sydney, Europe and the USA before returning to Sydney to attend art school, teach and, eventually, set up Anton James Design. My friends Thierry and David had just started Lacoste and Stevenson. Together, we rented a floor in an old warehouse and set up a studio. Several other fledgling practices joined shortly afterward. Springvale Community Precinct feels good. The successful collaboration between Rush Wright Associates and Lyons opened in 2020, four years after the practices won a limited competition run by the City of Greater Dandenong. Springvale Community Precinct takes the old library, council offices and a smattering of car parks and green spaces and replaces them with a new community hub building and a unified park extending over 2.6 hectares. The budget, partially funded by the sale of the former Springvale depot, was generous, thanks to a client able to recognize the value of good design. Most photogenically, the building’s west face – to busy Springvale Road – is an undulating ribbon of colour, a clever glazed brick mapping of the flags of very multicultural Springvale. Phillip Island, off Victoria’s south-eastern coast, is best known for its natural beauty and environmental values. In particular, it is known for the “Penguin Parade,” where little penguins (formerly known as fairy penguins) parade up Summerland Beach each night returning to their burrows. The Bunurong people’s connection to Millowl (the Bunurong name for Phillip Island) extends back tens of thousands of years. But as with most of Australia, the past 200 years have seen a dramatic change to the island’s natural landscape. Nearly 100 years ago, the first tourists began to visit the island, and it has since grown to become one of the state’s major tourist destinations. Suellen Fitzgerald assumed her role as the inaugural director of the parklands in 2008, following an act of parliament that enshrined the parklands as a self-governing authority. Western Sydney Parklands, one of the largest urban park systems in the world, is continuing to evolve through a range of imaginative designs by some of Sydney’s best landscape architects.
