Bungarribee Superpark Doonside, New South Wales James Mather Delaney Design The placename Bungarribee has been linked to the Darug and Gundungurra peoples, variously translated from bung, meaning “creek,” and garribee, meaning “cockatoo.” As with many Australian Indigenous placenames, there are often multiple, nuanced meanings that reflect evolving language and cultural practices as well as misinterpretations stemming from the beginning of colonial dispossession. James Kohen writes that Bungarribee continues to have an evolving meaning based on southern dialects and contemporary local Indigenous naming practices. Local elders often refer to Bungarribee as “camp site beside a creek,” whereas the only recorded meaning is “resting place of a king.”1 My point here is that like its placename, the landscape of Bungarribee Superpark reflects emergent and constantly evolving readings of site – nuanced, literal,…

Valley Lake Lookout Keilor East, Victoria McGregor Coxall Valley Lake Lookout, designed by McGregor Coxall and completed in early 2018, lies within a new infill residential development on a former quarry site, between Niddrie and Keilor East in Melbourne’s north-west. The lookout surveys a lake and the stone face of the former quarry that are the heart of the site. Assessing the public realm of a residential development in progress is often an uncertain undertaking. I assume that Development Victoria will err on the side of generosity and provide higher quality, more thoughtfully designed public space than the run-of-the-mill. In considering this project I have situated it within its broader context, as this speaks to the poetry of the design and its place in the urban fabric more strongly than…

RECIPIENT Kunpeng Wang PROGRAM Master of Landscape Architecture, The University of Melbourne PROJECT STATEMENT Conventional parks require extensive maintenance and resources such as potable water, energy and labour to stay “green” and “neat.” These responses are being challenged by climate change which is making Melbourne’s climate drier and hotter. Urban ecology, particularly the self-organizing assemblages of novel ecologies that can respond to climate change, offer a paradigm shift in “greening” public space. However, the messy appearance of novel ecosystems can hinder the broader appreciation and understanding of them by the public, particularly in cities where order is preferred over chaos. Using pattern as a design method for conveying meaning and order, this project explores the value of novel ecologies in developing a new open space for Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Market.…

Like all gardens, the zoo has been an object of consumption – a curation of nature’s amenity to humankind. As consumer attitudes have changed, so too has the cultural and aesthetic image of the zoo. In contemporary discussion, animal welfare awareness and a changing public conscience have driven the transformation of zoological gardens, catalysing a new design approach of “natural immersion.” ZooSubverted proposes an inversion of zoological precedence, where power hierarchies between captive animal and human observer are destabilized and redefined, forging a new landscape order. At twenty-seven Dan Pearson exhibited for the first time at the Chelsea Flower Show. He’d been gardening since he was five, always deeply fascinated by gardening catalogues and the plant kingdom, followed by horticultural training at the Royal Horticultural Society’s garden at Wisley, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and plant exploring in Spain and the Himalayas. The press was astounded to find such a young exhibitor who was both presentable and personable, knowledgeable and articulate. Opportunities to appear on television and to write articles for publication followed. In Pearson’s early years of schooling, a thoughtful teacher, recognizing his deep interest in plants, had introduced him to the world of garden literature. Immersing himself in wonderful word pictures, Pearson developed his own evocative writing style.…

It reimagines food production, distribution and consumption to address issues affecting society, the environment and human health caused by the phenomena of food homogenization, mass industrial food production and unhealthy urban food patterns. Rather than viewing food purely as sustenance, Tasting Territory proposes a collection of core drivers for the city that facilitate the local economy, promote cultural identity, protect the environment and secure the population’s long-term health. Tasting Territory progresses through three stages – farm palace, food incubators and food stations – each designed to alter consumers’ perception of food. The recent AILA International Festival of Landscape Architecture, held on the Gold Coast, was themed The Expanding Field: Charting the future of practice. Curated by creative directors TCL, it canvassed what people are doing in the field, what the possibilities and limits are of exploration and invention, and how these are being challenged and expanded by the larger forces and changes in the world. Professor Elizabeth Meyer, who had used the term in her paper and subsequent publication at the Edge Too conference hosted by RMIT landscape architecture students in 1992, gave an opening address via prerecorded video. NEW URBAN PARK FOR MELBOURNE Oculus has designed the proposal for a new 1,900-square-metre pocket park in Melbourne’s CBD, which would be the first new public space in the city since the construction of City Square in 1980. Occupying the western side of Market Street, the park would include 1,300 metres of space currently used for car parking. The design for the new park features a series of large, open lawn spaces on both Market and Collins Streets, a “playful terrace” with water play elements, and a paved plaza on Market Street with the potential to host a cafe and public events. Eve Apartments Erskineville, New South Wales 360 Degrees Landscape Architects The population of Australia’s capital cities continues to grow and conservative estimates for Sydney suggest a growth from 4.7 million in 2013 to 7.9 million by 2053.1 Of this population, the New South Wales Department of Planning dictates that 80 percent of new homes must be located within the city’s existing and planned urban footprint, meaning an additional 770,000 infill dwellings by 2036.2 This is a significant new societal and urban direction and we are now witnessing the emergence of a new urban Australia, in which backyards are increasingly scarce and the local park has been reduced in size to a handkerchief. Pip Munckton — How did you come to found MudMap Studio in Broome? Vanessa Margetts — I’ve had a strong connection with Broome for a long time. I did my honours degree there in 2008 and I built up strong relationships and connections with the community. I then worked at various firms, including UDLA.
