I’D finally got myself packed and was on the road. Destination Cooma, a trip that would see me covering about 935 miles from the Sunshine State (Queensland). My steed, the 1968 Series IIA trayback, of course. The first leg of the journey went well and you know what, I was actually enjoying it! That is until I pulled into my first campsite just outside Coffs Harbour. As the engine idled into the campsite I could hear a rattle from the engine bay. SEVENTEEN years. That’s how long it took Paul Ridler to complete the restoration of this 1976 2¼ petrol Series III 88in. It could well be a record. He did everything himself with the exception of the gearbox and transfer ’box rebuilds, which were entrusted to Whitehouse in Wolverhampton. Paul has a garage that will take two cars, but they have to be parked nose to tail, and there is barely room to squeeze between the walls on either side and the vehicles. IN ASSOCIATION WITH THERE are relatively few upgrades you can do to a Land Rover that benefit its use overall. Most are focused on improving capability in one area, but then others suffer slightly as a result. Mud-terrain tyres, for example, look great and will boost off-road prowess, but they can sap fuel economy and handling on the road can suffer. Happily, modifications do exist that offer benefits in more areas than one, and rock sliders are a great example. By fitting tough steel rails outboard and underneath the sills of a Land Rover, they offer excellent protection to the softer metal behind when navigating tough terrain, warding off rocks and stumps. Sliders with protruding ‘tree bars’, such as these new ones from Terrafirma, can also prevent car park biffs…

BABCOCK International, a defence company, has been awarded a one-year contract by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to help the British Army understand the Defence application and constraints of electric propulsion. Partnering with EV specialist Electrogenic, Babcock will convert four in-service military Land Rovers – two protected armoured vehicles and two general service models, from diesel to electric power using a drop-in kit and modified battery system. The vehicles will then be put to the test by the Armoured Trials and Development Unit (ATDU) in a series of experimental battlefield/military scenarios, which will assess performance over steep terrain, wading and towing, and varying climate-related conditions. FOR those of us who love old Land Rovers but haven’t got six-figure budgets, the new breed of ‘affordable classic’ auctions are a perfect place to find interesting metal. My two favourites are the well-established classic sale at Anglia Car Auctions and the newer rival put on at Letchworth Car Auctions. Both seem to have been started mainly to give a more appropriate outlet for some of the more niche older cars which find their way to the ‘normal’ sales. The latest ACA Classic had plenty of Series and Defenders with results which made me raise an eyebrow. HAVING crossed the border into Zaire, the next main stop for Philip Russell and Perry Dutfield would be Kinshasa – the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. With little petrol left and a reasonable distance still to travel, they paused at Thysville hoping to replenish their stocks, but with the absence of a bank, they eventually managed to change £5 into local currency at a hotel and get enough fuel to take them to Kinshasa. Then began several days of frustrating bureaucracy. BRITISH EV regeneration specialist, Inverted, has announced the launch of its debut model, an electrified Range Rover Classic, known as #001. Powered by a reconditioned low-mileage Tesla 80kWh battery module and Large Drive Unit, it produces a whopping 450bhp and 443lb-ft of torque, with a 0-60mph time of around five seconds. Three different drive modes – Eco, Sport and Off-Road – provide varying power outputs and regenerative braking levels. Range Rover enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that four-wheel-drive is retained and the original axles have been restored and uprated to reflect the significant increase in power, while the front brakes have been uprated to Alcon items. SOME of you may never have come across the phrase ‘busman’s holiday’ before. It’s something I heard a lot when I was a kid, although apparently it dates back to 1893.
