SHORTLY after the current model of Defender, designated L663, was launched, I was fortunate to have a close look at a 110 version in the Britpart workshop where Steve Grant pulled a few things apart for me to get a detailed understanding of the workings. Suspension, transmission, traction and braking systems were evolutions of the technology seen on earlier models, but the relatively new Ingenium 2.0-litre diesel engine was a perfect example of how engines have become massively complex in the fight to reduce emissions. Such as the ECU controlled variable flow coolant pump, and an automatically controlled thermostat that regulates the engine temperature according to load while independently controlling coolant flow to the cylinder head and engine block. THE ENTHUSIAST JAGUAR Land Rover’s return to profitability after many months of consecutive and mounting losses is excellent news, but despite the optical illusion that it happened as soon as ex-CEO Thierry Bolloré had departed just before Christmas, the reality is that the ground was prepared for this on his watch In the three months to the end of December 2022 the company recorded a profit of £265 million. In the same quarter the year before, it made a loss of £9 million. LIKE many events this year, the British Motor Museum’s annual Land Rover Show at Gaydon is planning to commemorate the marque’s 75th anniversary in style. ROVING REPORTER I’M taking the Lightweight to its first protest, against the Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) which a north London borough has instituted without bothering to first consult its residents. These LTNs have seen a raft of the borough’s side streets closed to all traffic accept permit-possessing residents and the emergency services. Some roads are blocked with square wooden planters, their floral contents trying to prettify the restrictions, and a padlocked bollard. Still more are marked with a single yellow sign topped with an enforcement camera which doles out £130 fines to unsuspecting motorists, including those who merely traversed a familiar road they have been using for decades. NORFOLK GARAGE I found myself having to shuffle jobs around to make room for some urgent repairs to a Defender 300Tdi which was being prepared for shipping abroad. The transport had been booked, all the paperwork sorted out, and then the shipper informed the owner that the vehicle would not be accepted if it was leaking oil. Now as we all know, an oil-tight Defender is a rare beast indeed, but there is a world of difference between a bit damp underneath and leaving little black puddles on the floor, which was what this particular Defender was doing. SINCE 2016 the West Cork Land Rover Run has been held in summer and winter for all Land Rovers young and old. Each run is slightly different and on the day you will see a string of Land Rovers winding through the various peninsulas in this region.
