MY nascent efforts to take the Lightweight back to its former canvas-backed glory are stalling, hardly encouraged by this recent cold snap. However, it could be the solution to a new interior damp menace – a mysterious excess of condensation. This has materialised after having all the leaks in the hardtop sealed up, and is not something I recall having been an issue before. It’s not only the cold drips that fall unpleasantly upon me. In the rear, it soaks the blanket reserved for my knees during long drives in the winter months and, on occasion, pools into puddles. I hitched up the car transporter trailer to my old Discovery and had a pretty uneventful run down and back, apart from a half-hour delay on the M4 after a couple of modern cars collided with each other and covered all four lanes with bits of splintered plastic. The old beast has been running well since I changed the head gasket about a year ago: there is a slow oil leak from the transfer ’box (“they all do that, sir”) and I really need to sort out the rot in the inner wings and bulkhead, if only to stop the carpets getting…

But the bonnet hinge covers were letting the show down, so I splashed £70 on replacing them while the intake moulding was off to access the wiper mechanism. 1 Crumbling Over the years, UV light had changed the composition of the rubberised hinge covers so much that bits broke away when they were lifted off. 2 Rubber pegs The hinge covers are fixed to the intake moulding by rubber pegs through these holes. The pegs can be sliced off from the underside using a craft knife. 3 Cleaning up The remnants of the old hinge covers are lifted off and the underside of the moulding cleaned…

IN March last year, Mike Read bought a Land Rover, 30 years after he first saw it parked in a field in northeast Scotland. It belonged to my great uncle, and it fell slowly into disrepair before his death. I bought it from his estate, gathered up all the bits that were scattered all over the farm and set about rebuilding it. GIVEN the problems it faces, it would be reasonable to suggest that the last thing JLR needs right now is leadership change at the top, but that is what it is going to get following last November’s announcement that CEO Thierry Bolloré would be leaving at the end of December. By the time you read these words he will have gone. Today that figure stands at 330,000km. So that means I have done 80,000km during my five years of ownership.
