THE past is a foreign country. They do things differently there. So read the immortal first line of The Go Between, a novel by L P Hartley, in which the narrator recalls the early years of the 20th century. But he could just as easily have been talking about the recent history of Land Rover. At the turn of this century, when there were just four Land Rover models (Defender, Discovery, Freelander and just one Range Rover, the P38), I’d have laughed if someone had told me that by 2021 there would be seven, including four variations on the Range Rover theme. FORGIVE me readers for it has been six weeks since I last drove a Land Rover. Since passing my test I think this is the longest I’ve been without driving a Land Rover and, according to my surgeon (after I ruptured my Achilles tendon), it could be further eight weeks or more before I can drive a manual. Prime among the reasons would be to carry out repairs to rusted areas of the body underside and/or chassis. When I read the article in the December issue I was surprised by the low cost of the Black Fly Lens units. This raised two questions. Are they any good? And why are others so expensive? Show us what you’re working on… You never gave us a model year for your project. Why? Good question. It’s a bitser and is made up of Land Rover parts produced between 1973 and 1976. Just like the Johnny Cash song (One Piece at a Time). How did you find this project? The project actually found me. My friend’s dad is a Land Rover collector of sorts. His nephew restored a Discovery 1 300Tdi on the family farm, with some help and supervision of course. I remarked that I too would love to rebuild a Defender or Series for myself. I think his dad overheard me as they said I should rebuild the 2.25 petrol that they had on the farm as farmers prefer diesel. What’s the story so far?…

AS you might have guessed from the title of this month’s column, this is a bit of a confessional. I’ll come right out with it. I’ve had a test ride in the Ineos Grenadier. And I wasn’t the only lifelong Land Rover enthusiast that did so. There have been a lot of us, apparently. Not that I’m claiming that as my defence. I went precisely because I am a diehard Land Rover nut, and because Land Rover stopped making a vehicle that I am very fond of. IN ASSOCIATION WITH CARRYING a spare wheel on a Defender usually means utilising the structure of a rear door. Factory wheel carriers mount straight on the door frame itself which, over time, weakens from repeated slamming or jolts from driving the vehicle. Throw in the passing of time, some wear and tear, a larger than standard tyre and the door will surely either begin to crack, or the hinges will wear. Aftermarket solutions to the problem often involve drilling extra holes in the bodywork, and still require the vulnerable and tired door to bear some weight of the heavy spare wheel. Before long, the door and hinges require replacement anyway. Not everyone likes to drill extra holes in bodywork, but here is a design that leaves the body untouched. ORE…

WHAT started as a Facebook group in January 2018 for anyone with a common interest in P38s who wanted social interaction, offificially turned into the Range Rover P38 Owners South Coast a year later. THERE is something rotten in the state of Denmark, or rather in the engine of my Lightweight. And everything points to the carburettor. When I collected the Lightweight in Devon after its extensive bodywork late last year, top mechanic Dave had warned me the carburettor was worn and would need either a rebuild or replacement but, in true Series-driver style, I figured the current incumbent would rattle loyally on for some time and promptly forgot about it. But the worn carburettor is increasingly impossible to ignore. Once it’s warmed up, the Lightweight’s engine on tickover often sounds stuck, running too loud and too rich. This is easily ignored whilst motoring along but, during repeated stops at London’s endless traffic lights, the noise reaches an excessive roar which drives me insane.…

WE’VE all done it. You’re trying to shift a tight bolt and it won’t move. You reach for the breaker bar, give it nice big heave and your joy at feeling it come loose turns to dismay as you realise the bolt has snapped off. What next? I have to deal with seized fasteners quite a lot, and the first point to make is that it is far better not to get into a snapped bolt scenario in the first place. If a fastener will not undo, stop and think before getting medieval with it. A few minutes spent persuading it to come loose could save you an hour or more of pain and grief trying to extract the broken remains. A couple of things which might help. An impact…

THOSE of you who follow me on Instagram (@busheditor) will know that I recently purchased a Red Paddle Company stand up paddle board. I went for the Voyager 13.2’ as like my Defender it is a tourer, you can just load it with gear and go wild camping and exploring. Just another toy for this boy who likes to go on adventures. Not content with social paddles on nearby rivers, myself and three friends (Harry Shipton, Chloe Strudwick and Nic Palfrey) recently did the Trent 100 stand up paddle event. This 100km team endurance paddle is also known as the Trent Descent as it starts 100kms from Nottingham and you basically paddle just downstream for 100km. Sounds simple, right? Take, for instance, a complete brake set and suspension replacement which is a fairly common and often essential exercise on old vehicles merely to keep them rolling safely. Using Genuine Land Rover parts to do this could easily cost as much as some vehicles are worth, but the significantly lower cost of aftermarket parts means an old truck can be rejuvenated and made safe for comparatively little money. IN ASSOCIATION WITH ALL diesel engines need the fuel to be pre-heated to assist a cold engine to start. This is done with a glow plug or heater plug for each cylinder, located in either the combustion chamber or the pre-chamber. The heater glow plug is in effect a simple electrical heater element that provides the initial heat to help the fuel combust when starting the engine from cold. Without this, especially in cold weather, the engine is difficult, or impossible, to start. The glow plugs are operated automatically by a control unit that switches them on for a particular time period according to the sensed engine temperature. Earlier diesel engines, such as in the Series vehicles, required the ignition switch to be manually held in the heater plug position…

HERE in the UK we often pause to marvel at the ever-rising values of old-style Defenders, demand for which never seems to abate. But the prices these vehicles fetch in America knocks them into a cocked hat. There’s nothing the Yanks love better than a Land Rover. Our great statesman, Winston Churchill (whose mum was American), once quipped that “Americans and British are one people separated by a common language” but these days they’re divided by the prices they’re prepared to pay to satisfy their common love of Defenders. Recent auction results illustrate the big bucks paid on t’other side of the pond. At Pebble Beach Auctions in August a low-mileage 1997 NAS Defender 90 fetched $145,600 (£106,150), while a standard (albeit extraordinarily well preserved) 1973 Series III fetched $61,600.…
