Arthur joined the Rover Company towards the end of the Second World War and was responsible for the design and launch of the first Land Rover. In 1957, Arthur left Rover to join Lucas Girling, where he played a leading role in developing the company’s disc brake system. So, expect the usual galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals. But even without that, the aluminium and steels are very capable of corroding on their own, especially the inner sills and underfloor and the load space floor, all of which need close scrutiny. Rusted sills and floor can be very expensive to restore properly. The steel chassis (not to be confused with the Discovery II’s reputation for falling out onto the road) is relatively long lasting but, given these trucks can be up to 30 years old, it remains important to expect corrosion problems. Rust is Discovery 1’s worst enemy. Inner wings, wheel arches, sills, footwells and boot floor are the most prone, although chassis are seldom affected, especially at the front where oil leaks tend to offer some protection. Discoverys are made from steel and aluminium panels. Obviously as D1s age – the oldest are now 32 years old – corrosion is more likely to appear on anything ferrous. Aftermarket panels are good value, but regular cleaning with a pressure washer, plus underbody protection like Waxoyl, is a good insurance policy.…

LAND Rovers took centre stage at the 2020 Royal Automobile Club’s (RAC) Historic Awards. Yes, it might already be 2021, but the awards ceremony, which is usually held at the RAC’s impressive Pall Mall HQ in London, was delayed in an attempt to see if members could attend. Covid decided otherwise and eventually the decision was taken to host an online ceremony. It was definitely worth the wait as Land Rovers dominated the awards from start to finish. HAVING recently got back into surf boat rowing (infinitely more exciting than flatwater rowing – you row out through the break and catch a wave back in) I am now regularly travelling up to the Sunshine Coast for training sessions and volunteering as a surf lifesaver. The source of water ingress was evidenced primarily as failed vent seals, but around the car, Britpart’s Steve Grant also spotted a number of door seals that were either torn, perished, or otherwise defective. Our test mule, at 22 years old, tells a typical story of aged rubber. Just as you wouldn’t expect two decade old tyres to be any good, so it is with rubber weather seals. Today, it is in the care of the Dunsfold Collection and is one of only two survivors of just ten that were modified in the mid-1950s in response to a War Office requirement. IN ASSOCIATION WITH WHEN this Defender 90 Td5 station wagon was originally inspected it was clear that a new chassis was not only warranted, but was the only sensible solution to preserve the Land Rover for years to come. Having removed the body in one piece, the next job is to remove everything that is reusable from the rolling chassis, ready to transfer to the new heavy-duty galvanised chassis. There is no strict order to the process of stripping a rolling chassis, although it becomes clear that there is a logical order to things. For instance, it is fairly obvious to remove the engine and gearboxes first. Removal of the axles is usually one of the last tasks undertaken.
