The best show in town LIKE Dave Phillips (LRM, January) one of the things I missed most during the coronavirus-affected year 2020 was the outdoor Land Rover events that were cancelled. For most of my adult life these shows have been the highlights of my summer. The Billing Show was always my favourite. I started going there in the 1990s and even booked my summer holidays so that I could camp at the Aquadrome for a week and immerse myself in all things Land Rover, with the best people in the world, who of course were – and still are – Land Rover fans. IF you care what Top Gear thinks then you might be interested to hear that the new Defender has secured both the overall Car of the Year and the Unstoppable Force award, adding to its 30 global accolades to date. Judges of the prestigious prize praised the new Defender for being one of the toughest vehicles on the road today, and a brilliant successor to the original iconic Land Rover. Fined for reckless behaviour We here at LRM will only use rights of way with known, proven or provable vehicular rights, and we hope our readers take the same approach when it comes to driving on unsurfaced roads. One chap that didn’t and was rightfully punished for it was Benjamin Long, 18, who caused extensive damage to heathland while ‘test driving’ a Land Rover before abandoning it at the top of a hill. He was fined £500 each for driving an overweight vehicle on a greenway road and driving a vehicle elsewhere other than on a highway, and given three penalty points.
