Widespread closures and job losses in the automotive sector JAGUAR Land Rover and Aston Martin Lagonda were among businesses taking part in an online summit to develop a strategy that could be submitted to the government to halt the onset of job losses. Organised by the West Midlands TUC and hosted by West Midlands mayor Andy Street, it came as the Unite union said the region had suffered a ‘devastating’ 8000 job cuts by a number of major employers in just one week. With the furlough scheme set to end in October, and the addition of Brexit tariffs, there are fears more job cuts could be on the way. “THIS vehicle is being destroyed!” the fella exclaims in frustration, as he loads our bicycles into the back of his Discovery for the umpteenth time. They do fit, but annoyingly require a two-person slightly jigsaw, approach. FROM the earliest Series I Land Rovers through the Series II and Series III models, the rear body tubs were finished at the factory with galvanised body cappings and galvanised light cluster corner cappings. When the One Ten and Ninety models were introduced in the first half of the 1980s, the practice of fitting galvanised body cappings continued. These galvanised cappings did not suffer from rust, except in local areas where perhaps a constant drip of water occurred over the years. The nature of galvanised steel meant the rust did not spread through the cappings, remaining localised. Towards the introduction of the Defender name to utility Land Rovers, the practice of fitting galvanised cappings at the factory ceased in Station Wagon and Hard Top models – the cappings were simply…

A metallic growling noise in the engine bay is not what you expect to hear from a newly rebuilt V8. So it was a relief to see a steady drip of liquid coming from the coolant pump gland on the front of the engine, which suggested the pump was the source of the noise. The coolant pump’s bearings and seals sit next to each other on the pump shaft so, when the bearings wear with age, they allow the shaft to move slightly which, in turn, distorts the seals allowing coolant to drip out. An engine rebuild doesn’t include the front cover and coolant pump so, before fitting these, we’d carefully checked the pump for bearing condition, and it seemed fine at the time. A CONTACTLESS screen… Sounds like black magic, right? Wrong, those clever bods at JLR have used artificial intelligence and sensors as a way to control its infotainment systems without needing to touch the screen. The patented technology, known as Predictive Touch, does what it says on the tin – it predicts a user’s intended target on the touchscreen – whether that’s satellite navigation, temperature controls or entertainment settings – without touching a button. How exactly? The tech uses AI to determine the item the user intends to select on the screen early in the pointing task, speeding up the interaction. A gesture tracker then uses vision-based or radio frequency-based sensors, which are increasingly common in consumer electronics, to combine contextual information such as user profile, interface design and environmental conditions…

TELESCOPIC INSPECTION MIRROR PRICE: £20.02 CONTACT: Lasertools.co.uk Laser tools have just launched this all-in-one telescopic inspection mirror, magnetic pick-up tool and scriber. The pen-sized tool folds up neatly to just 150 mm long and clips neatly in the pocket, but extends to a full 680 mm. The mirror is a useful 40 mm in diameter and can be rotated through 360° and adjusted to any angle. Unscrew the mirror and you now have the magnetic pick-up tool. And it’s a powerful magnet – it will hold 454 g (1 lb) – really useful with that extended reach. At the opposite side, unscrew the end cap to reveal the scriber. THERE’S no place like home! After a day out in one of my two elderly Land Rovers (combined age 60 years), it’s so good to walk up to my front door, which opens itself at my approach, thanks to Keyless Entry. After all, keys are so yesterday. The temperature inside is already perfect. My Cabin Pre-Conditioning remote control with its seven-day timer has already taken care of that. Once I’m in, my Soft Door Close technology controls the last 6 mm of door travel, gently shutting the front door. Who would want it any other way? Now I’m inside, all is light and airy. RUNNING three Land Rovers, chances are at least one of them will require some sort of attention sooner or later. Having had a couple of trouble-free months I knew my time was coming. Which would it be? ‘Grandma’, ‘Old Girl’ or ‘Bruce’. In all honesty Grandma, my V8 Series IIA is the most problem-prone. Could sticking a V8 in place of the 2.25 be the cause of the issues? The only way is off THERE’S a lot of rear tub restoration going on at the moment in LRM technical, and there’s good reason for it. It all started a couple of issues ago when Steve Miller lifted the rear body off his Ninety to deal with serious rust. And that’s the way to do it – rear tubs can be repaired in situ, but there’s nothing like dismantling the body to get proper access to effect the very best of repairs. And when a rear tub reaches the state where welding and re-panelling is needed, there will be plenty of other areas that need fettling. The only way is off. ALL Land Rovers use fixings to hold parts together, and those fixings, wherever they are, work by being under tension, which causes the fixing’s threads to grip and hold. Too much tension will strip threads, crack heads off bolts, or damage alloy casings. Too little will mean the items don’t work as intended, wear rates increase, or worse, fixings work loose. Rather than use the Mk1 elbow and guesswork, there’s a tool we should all own for those times when we need to be certain of a fixing’s torque. Indeed, the torque wrench is an essential for fixings requiring to be tightened to a certain torque as specified by Land Rover. Torque is a turning effect (or turning moment). Yob culture I was looking at a friend’s LRM Drive 25 mag and was astounded that under the activity entitled wild camping you suggest that if you do not have any fire wood then “take an axe and go and find some”. THINGS aren’t getting any easier for JLR. As relations continue to deteriorate between the UK and China, Beijing and its ambassador in London have resorted to making threats that ‘British’ firms like JLR will be made to ‘suffer’ as a consequence of the UK government’s decision to ditch Huawei. This seems to be a particularly daft threat to make to JLR given that its factory in China is part of a 50:50 joint venture with Chinese carmaker Chery. The plant assembles the Evoque, Discovery Sport and the Jaguar XE to meet local demand, although the majority of JLR’s sales in China are actually of vehicles that are built elsewhere. I have a lot of respect for people who decide that they are going to restore a rotten, worn-out Land Rover and manage to see the task through to completion. I have more than 30 years’ experience with these vehicles to draw on and even then there are jobs which turn out to be far from straightforward. How very hard it must be to dismantle, restore and reassemble an entire Land Rover, when you have limited experience and will be doing most of the jobs for the first time in your life. FOLLOWING on from last month’s repair of the lower front area of the rear body tub and rebuilding of the seat belt mounting structure, work is still needed on the B-posts, specifically the striker plate panels. This is an important area because it contributes to the strength and rigidity needed to withstand door slamming and latching. Thankfully, YRM Metal Solutions offer a repair section for these common corroded areas, too. In order to carry out these repairs with the rear tub fitted to the vehicle, you would need to remove the seatbox from the body in order to gain access.
