IT’S not just international events that are being cancelled due to the continuing uncertainty regarding the Coronavirus (Covid-19), it’s also starting to affect major conferences, festivals and shows, and the Newbury 4x4 and Vintage Spares Day is the latest to fall victim. Due to take place on Sunday April 5 at Newbury Showground, it has been postponed until Sunday August 16. This busy, well-established event is normally the largest Land Rover and vintage spares autojumble event of its type in Europe, but the constantly evolving Coronavirus situation is a cause for concern for the event organiser Mark Woodward. WHEN I read the headline above in a recent Sunday Times article by Nick Rufford I must admit that I mouthed a silent “I told you so”. You see, I recently found myself having some rather heated discussions with two local owners of electric vehicles who were delighted with the Government’s February announcement; the one where Boris declared his intention to ban the sale of new vehicles powered by internal combustion engines by 2035 at the latest. Boris’ pronouncement also said that sales of new hybrid vehicles with an internal combustion engine will be banned at the same time, meaning the only vehicles we’ll be able to purchase new will be powered solely by electricity or hydrogen. IN ASSOCIATION WITH MY 2004 Defender 90 Td5 was in the workshop recently for its annual service and preparation for the MoT test. All of the oils and filters were changed and a worn steering drop arm ball joint was replaced. Having checked for play in all four wheel bearings by jacking the wheels off the ground and shaking each wheel in turn, I detected slight movement in the front right wheel and assumed that it was a simple matter of tightening the wheel bearing, which I could do later. Before heading to the test centre I checked again and discovered the play was actually in the swivel ball assembly. This was not a quick fix, so to keep my appointment I informed the MoT tester of the issue and…

IN ASSOCIATION WITH THERE are plenty of interesting differences on this 2.0-litre (non original) engine when compared to the later Series mills, as we’ve seen in previous installments. But the first job this month, of fitting the cylinder head, is a relatively simple operation, and little different to later engines except, of course, that sloping top face on the engine block. The engine is being built by Steve Grant in the Britpart workshop, and he’s picking up momentum in the final stages of this demanding engine build. TUNISIA has a new Land Rover club, and it’s only for Defenders. The first question you have to answer on requesting to join their Facebook group is: “Do you have a Defender in Tunisia?” in French (Tunisia is dual Arabic-French speaking). I have to apologetically answer (in English) that I don’t, but that I do have a nice Lightweight back in England. RICHARD HALL bought his first Land Rover, a Series III, just after his 18th birthday and has since owned, maintained and restored these vehicles for over 30 years now. WHEN my beloved Discovery 1 finally became too rusty for economical repair three years ago, I abandoned my plan of moving up to a Discovery 2 because of all the media attention that had been drawn to the very serious rear chassis corrosion on those models. I did toy with the idea of buying a D2 and having it rebuilt on a galvanised chassis, but as I wasn’t capable of doing the work myself, the sheer amount of labour involved made that idea prohibitively expensive. So, I thought, should I go for a Discovery 3? After all, everyone said they were rustproof. The only thing that held me back was the prices they were fetching. Never mind, I thought, I’ll wait…

WHEN I bought my first Range Rover, in 1995, it came equipped with a farm gate. Or at least it looked as if had. On closer inspection, the huge black powder-coated tubular steel monstrosity attached to the front chassis members was what was then known as a bull bar. It looked hideous. Such ugly attachments weren’t a factory fit. My 1983 four-door would have left Solihull with the same classic lines that had delighted early Range Rover aficionados since 1970. My guess was that this sacrilege was committed some time in the late 1980s, when a bull bar on a 4x4 became de rigueur. YOU may remember I’ve had a slight issue with the idling of my Range Rover. It was absolutely faultless on the family holiday to Cornwall last year, covering 500 miles and returning just over 20 mpg. But, probably from September, I’d had a problem where it would stall, typically at junctions and traffic lights. I’d be at a steady cruise, brake to a halt, the revs would drop, the car then barely tick over and the engine would die. A month later, it began misfiring, clearing itself over 3000 revs. Clearly something was up. It was almost as if the revs were just a hair too low, all the time. IN ASSOCIATION WITH REPLACING corroded, sheared or damaged fuel and brake pipes is the kind of task most of us would like to be able to achieve with the minimum of fuss and expense. Pre-formed pipes (if you can find them and have them delivered undamaged) are not typical for most replacement versions. Instead, you will receive a section of pipe, flat or coiled, ready for forming into shape for fitment. Off the vehicle, this isn’t usually an issue, as access is total and several pipe benders can be deployed if necessary. In situ is another matter altogether. Cutting and splicing pipes using the correct unions is often easier than trying to reach ABS units, fuel pumps, hydraulic pipes and limited-access pipe runs. Working in situ, the tool must be…
