I am fortunate enough to have several hobbies and interests beside Land Rovers. If I have had a particularly bad day in the workshop I can go home and do something completely different. My father is a keen (and very skilled) railway modeller, and passed on his enthusiasm to me at an early age. Could there be a greater contrast between fitting a new set of leaf springs to a Series III, and constructing a tiny working model locomotive from scraps of brass and plastic? I have yet to find anyone who thinks that exempting old Land Rovers from the annual MoT test is a good idea. The majority of my Series customers continue to put their vehicle in for test every year regardless of what the law says, but occasionally I come across a vehicle that hasn’t been tested for a while. The theory behind the exemption is that ‘historic’ vehicles are maintained to a high standard, so the MoT test would not pick up any faults that the owner has not dealt with. The Central Southern Vintage Agricultural Club is holding a Land Rover Day and small autojumble on Sunday October 13 at the Rural Life Centre at Tilford in Surrey. The CSVAC who are based at the museum aim is to help and encourage enthusiasts from all walks of life and all ages to restore, repair and save the different and varied forms of agricultural machinery. IT’S a bad idea to sell your Land Rover, and I don’t advise it. But there are times when a better one comes along and something has to go to make space or cash for the new purchase. All that’s needed to get the best price for a Land Rover is confidence, and I don’t mean gung-ho nonsense such as ‘she’s a beauty, mate’ and ‘first to see will buy’. Such statements have no substance. Real confidence comes from being honest about what we’re selling, and from knowing the vehicle has a good service record, has been looked after, that repairs have been attended to properly, and that the truck is running as it should. MOST antifreeze is ethylene glycol-based, with pre- and post-1998 vehicles broadly using silicate and organic acid tech (OAT), respectively. One tester worked with rarer propylene glycol. To check temperature protection we poured solutions of 33 and 50 per cent, which should protect to -18 and -34 degrees Celsius for silicate, and -18 and -36 deg C for OAT solutions. For propylene, we used 40 and 50 per cent, for -28 and -40 deg C. We checked each for accuracy, logging three results from each tester, and also marked the products for usability, clear and safe instructions, and price at the time of testing.…

AS part of a farming family, coupled with heavy plant hire, Land Rovers have been an intrinsic part of my life. The articles you write in LRM are brilliant, evoking every emotion I know from crying and laughing – OMG, been there, done that mistake – to screaming at the page, saying: “Why do people fit rear brake springs the wrong way?” (Brilliant article by Richard Hall, by the way). I’VE just been watching a fascinating documentary on the next stage of mankind’s space endeavours, which is NASA’s ambitions to send manned craft to Mars. In order to achieve that, it is believed the US will set up a space station on the Moon, where the first priority will be to extract water from the rocks and then convert that water to hydrogen and oxygen, which will be the fuel to power a rocket from the Moon to Mars. I didn’t even know there was water on the Moon, but apparently there is, in its rocks, and just waiting to be extracted. THE last four weeks I have been back in the UK visiting friends, family and getting a gigantic fix of Land Rovers. The last time I was over here was a very brief visit five years ago. With that hideously long flight over here I felt this time it needed to be for a decent spell. I arrived on the hottest day of the year, a blistering 38 degrees at Heathrow. I have often wondered why Football Premiership teams do pre-season tours to Asia. After spending the first four days on the Last Overland expedition as they made their way from Singapore’s F1 pit building to northern Malaysia’s city of Alor Satar, I now know why. IN the mid-1980s the Land Rover enthusiast scene was very different to the one we’re all familiar with today. The first monthly magazine dedicated to Land Rovers did not appear until July 1987, and even then it initially focussed only on new vehicles and was clearly aimed at the hunting, shooting and fishing brigade. Old Land Rovers were cheap and plentiful, and it would be another 25 years or more before early vehicles started to become blue-chip classics with prices to match. There was a thriving club scene that had its roots in the Rover Owners’ Association and the Land Rover Owners’ Club that had been set up by The Rover Company in the 1950s, and there were a growing number of clubs dedicated to one or other of the…

2019 marks the 30th Birthday of the launch of the Discovery and this year the now annual Discovery Birthday Party celebrations, which supports the Marie Curie and Horizon charities will take place over the weekend of October 18 and 20 on Plymouth Hoe and at other locations used during the original launch of the Discovery 30 years ago. WHAT a month of contrasts this summer has been. We’ve seen a new UK record temperature of 38.7 degrees C and torrential rain that nearly burst a dam in Derbyshire and could have turned the annual Kelmarsh Show in Northamptonshire into a bit of a washout if it hadn’t been for the indomitable spirit of the Land Rover fans that did attend. They just mucked in and got on with the job – just like a Land Rover, in fact. The same rain that turned the Kelmarsh arena into a quagmire didn’t do any favours to my local greenlanes, about 20 miles away. • Wear thick protective gloves when working with sharp edges, grinding, cutting and when using an angle grinder. • Hold the angle grinder with two hands to control torque twist and kick-back. • Wear eye protection when grinding, cutting, wire brushing, sanding, releasing springs and clips, when opening fluid lines and working on overhead parts. • Wear a particle filter when removing rust and cleaning brake parts. • Wear steel toe-capped work shoes that will protect against falling objects and ensure better grip on slippery floors. • When welding, wear specialist welding protective gloves, clothing and mask. OUR tests were primarily based around wet and dry suction. We pitted each vac against rice, sugar and flour. Also, we timed how long each model took to suck up 10 litres of water. Extra points were awarded for ease-of-use features such as long power leads and hoses, plus accessories supplied, drain plugs and adjustable-height extension tubes, and vacs scored well if swapping from wet to dry operation was simple. Features such as air blowing, upholstery/carpet cleaning and automatic filter cleaning also picked up extra points. BUILD No. 6 from Twisted’s Classic Series I collection were invited to take part in one of the world’s most exclusive road tours – the Atlantic Road Trip, which crosses four countries from Oslo to Pärnu, via Stockholm, Helsinki and Tallinn. SIX courageous walkers (four of which were current or ex Household Cavalry servicemen) walked 470 miles from Windsor Castle to Edinburgh Castle in August in aid of two deserving army charities (the Household Cavalry Foundation and Royal British Legion ) – and two Land Rover Discovery support vehicles were behind them all the way. The vehicles were essential to the smooth running of the ten-day trek, from the departure at Windsor Castle to their triumphant arrival on Castle esplanade in Edinburgh as part of the pre-show entertainment that precedes the Royal Military Tattoo on August 7. I’VE not been sleeping at all well for the past couple of months. It’s the guilt, you see. IT’S HARD TO put a value on many of the vehicles in the Dunsfold Collection, because they are one-offs and so, by definition, unique. But in relative terms, our 1971 Darien Gap expedition Range Rover has to be one of the most valuable. It has such fantastic history and it’s a survivor of the first Land Rover extreme overland adventure. Hang on, you say, what about the Oxford-Cambridge Far Eastern expedition, the one immortalised in the book First Overland? SADLY I have had to say goodbye to my young assistant. The Boy has been accepted to join the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and has departed to start his basic training. One of the last jobs he did was to thoroughly tidy and reorganise the parts store, as a result of which I can no longer find anything. Over the last year he has put in a lot of hard work, uncomplainingly and willingly tackled the filthiest tasks, got on and done stuff without having to be prodded, shown a good understanding of mechanical principles and some real problem-solving ability, and generally been far more useful than a teenager has any right to be. A lovely area of the UK to visit with plenty of tourist attractions. There is a wealth of greenlanes in the area of the Yorkshire Dales and most are suitable for any Land Rover. There is plenty of accommodation to suit every taste and budget, as well as stunning Yorkshire towns and villages and some cracking pubs.
