IN the month that we celebrate 30 years of the incredible Discovery, allow me to take this opportunity to reflect. The first Land Rover story that I covered was the African leg of the inaugural Land Rover G4 Challenge. As journos we were ferried about in Discovery 2s, wild camping our way along the touristy Garden Route. It was an adventure of epic proportions, a week of Land Rover overload. I was hooked and that it is how my Land Rover story began. Thanks to the Discovery 2 it is a story that has gone on for over 15 years now and will hopefully continue for another 15, and then some. DID you know that women make up just 11 per cent of UK automotive industry engineers? And as a result of that gender gap it’s no surprise that recent research by Women in Engineering shows just a quarter of girls aged 16-18 would consider an engineering career. With a passion to change gender attitudes, which are established at an early age, Jaguar Land Rover visited a group of primary school children to mark International Women in Engineering Day. A few months ago, Richards Chassis ran a competition to win a chassis, and all entrants had to do to be in with a chance of winning was place the 10,000th order, via their website. On June 10, Gordon Learoyd was the lucky winner, and he received a new chassis for his 110 Defender 300Tdi just ten days later, worth £2100. I’VE been reading LRM for a number of years and always look to it for information and inspiration. I just wanted to let you know I’ve taken editor Patrick’s advice and over the next week and a bit we will be doing the NE250 that you highlighted in the magazine last year. I got my Defender 90 in February and there have been a few modifications to make it more comfy, as I tap on my phone it sits in the car park at the pub in York where we are staying until we head north tomorrow.
