THE LATEST 3.0-litre 400hp petrol engine is now available for the Range Rover, delivering clean and efficient technology for customers. Slovakia to build new Defender JLR HAS confirmed that the all-new Land Rover Defender will be assembled at its Nitra plant in Slovakia, which opened last October. A JLR statement said: “Designed and engineered in the UK, the new Defender will be unveiled later this year. It will use the latest clean Ingenium engines built at Wolverhampton, reinforcing both the company’s British roots and the diversified, globalised nature of its manufacturing strategy.” Although the move to Slovakia is no surprise, especially with the car maker’s decisions to relocate production of the Discovery last year, it only secures fears of a decline in British car manufacturing. THERE’S A nasty rumour going around that Jaguar Land Rover is in such deep doggie do-dos that owners Tata will either seek outside investment, sell it off or close it down completely. Amid falling sales, the company posted losses of £273 million for the last quarter of 2018, and has already cut 4500 jobs this year as part of a £2.5 billion cost-saving programme. II’S ALL a bit of a juggling act at the moment as I work on the restoration of my recently acquired Series IIA and set about getting Grandma ready for her biggest trip yet – driving from Canberra to Uluru (better known as Ayers Rock, in Europe). A couple of issues ago when my Ninety V8 was completed I mentioned that the engine was running fairly well, subject to getting it on a rolling road to fine tune the carburettor needles. Because it’s an unusual combination of a 3.9-litre with carburettors, there is no standard needle to suit, so it was a case of fitting best-guess needles for the running-in period. I intended to bring the Ninety back home from Britpart a few weeks ago, but another test run convinced me the fuel/air mixture was too weak to risk the 180 miles journey, given that a weak mixture can cause internal overheating and engine damage – and this is a re-manufactured engine that isn’t even run in. Wastegate turbo SO FAR, I have described a turbo whose speed, and therefore the amount of air charge pressure, is dictated by the speed of exhaust gas flowing through its turbine. In practice, driving in different gears, up hills, towing, accelerating and other criteria demand that the turbo supplies air at an ideal pressure for the occasion, so the air pressure needs to be modulated or controlled. On earlier turbos this is achieved by a wastegate – a flap valve that allows exhaust gas to bypass the turbine, thus lowering the turbine speed and reducing the air charge pressure (known as boost pressure) as the flap valve closes, and boost pressure increases. The wastegate is controlled automatically according to the charge pressure transmitted via a rubber pipe from the compressor…

MOST TURBOCHARGERS fail due to oil starvation ruining the bearings, or ingress of foreign objects causing erosion or break up of the turbine or compressor rotors. OIL STARVATION: This can be caused by a partially blocked or poor quality oil filter and failure of the filter bypass valve. Excessive carbon in the engine, usually due to incorrect oil and/or poor lubrication servicing can be carried through to the turbo and partially block the oil galleries feeding the bearings, as can metallic particles in the oil from engine wear. Overheated engine oil, caused by driver abusive or cooling system failure, can lose some lubrication qualities – easily avoided by using the engine sympathetically and renewing the oil after an overheat situation. A MONTH or two ago I wrote about the Stage One V8 88-inch Station Wagon that’s the latest addition to my collection of far too many old Land Rovers. FORMED BACK in 1982 the Red Rose Land Rover Club formed for like-minded people to meet and share the highs and lows of Land Rover ownership, and that still remains true today. SHOWS ARE very personal things. Some will go to the same show in the same Land Rover and chat to the same people year after year. I am not judging you, because I do exactly the same thing. The show that I do this at is the Adventure Overland Show held at the Stratford-upon-Avon Racecourse. It used to be an annual affair but now they have two shows – a spring and autumn version. THE MOT test is a good value safety check, but it doesn’t confirm that a vehicle is safe. The tester does not dismantle parts nor even take the wheels off to aid inspection, so a lot of potential trouble spots go unchecked. In theory, that’s okay because all those other areas would be checked as part of the service schedule, assuming the full service schedule is carried out at the prescribed intervals. We’ve probably all heard the patter from certain car sales people: “We’ll give it a full service before it goes out, sir/ madam”. SO, THE idea of getting maximum air into the engine cylinders is to increase the force of expansion to drive the pistons down. It’s logical that the cooler the air going into the engine, the more dense it is, and the more potential it has to expand – so cooler air means greater performance. The problem with a turbocharger is that the act of compressing the air raises its temperature and, to make this worse, exhaust heat from the turbine conducts through the casing and the shaft to further raise the temperature of the air leaving the compressor. That is dealt with by diverting the charge air from the compressor through an intercooler (effectively a radiator mounted behind the grille) through which ambient air flows, cooling the charge air inside.…

RECONDITIONED WASTEGATE turbos are available, but not the variable vane type. Variable vane units require to be calibrated with their control unit, an extremely precise job requiring sophisticated equipment. I understand suppliers usually require the old variable vane turbo, not for remanufacture, but for scrapping to keep it out of the reconditioning market. Aim for an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) unit and be wary of fakes. Only the exact type for the engine should be fitted. Never attempt DIY service. Parts are difficult to obtain, special tools are needed and the assembly needs to be precisely balanced at speed, and maximum speed and boost needs to be set under test. FOR THE last few months I have been running the Michelin Tyre Pressure Management System on my Defender. It’s a simple yet accurate way to constantly monitor your tyre pressures. First up you make sure all your tyres are at the pressure you would like them to be. For me this was 2 bar or 30 psi. There is a sensor for each wheel that is easily screwed on and you are just about ready to go. They did provide a sensor lock nut to prevent against theft or the sensor coming off, but I did not use it. That is like stealing a TV remote control but not the actual TV. A PROPERLY used turbocharger can be expected to last the life of the engine, assuming the engine itself is correctly maintained. And that’s quite a result, considering turbochargers were never designed with any direct maintenance in mind. Even on the increasingly complex turbochargers fitted to later engines, there is still no prescribed maintenance for the turbo and, in many cases, no possibility of accessing it if there was. In theory, they’re a fit-and-forget component. In practice, they can fail in a variety of ways. With early turbos we can often work out the problem, maybe fix it, and certainly renew the turbo ourselves. On later electronically controlled versions it’s a different matter.
