AS PART of its £2.5 billion turnaround plan, Jaguar Land Rover is expected to cut up to 5000 jobs next year. After the car manufacturer posted a £90 million loss on the third quarter with a lessening demand for diesel cars, costs associated with Brexit and trade tensions in China, the company will be outlining part of its restructuring plan at the start of 2019, with job losses expected to help deliver cost savings. The news comes on top of JLR announcing that 180 agency workers were being laid off at its Solihull factory at the end of November. I’VE BEEN away so much this year that, when my MoT expired, my mum had to hand deliver the keys to Tim the Overworked Mechanic so he could collect the Lightweight and take it for its MoT. Miles is originally from Cornwall but has called Nepal home for the last decade or so. He learned to work on Land Rovers as a kid and today he is known as the go-to guy for all things Land Rover-related in Kathmandu thanks to his workshop, Land Rovers Overland, to the south of the city. Every time his publisher sells a copy of his book, he earns about one US dollar – enough to buy a litre of petrol and propel him another few kilometres towards the horizon. TODAY I have a rendezvous with Land Rover restorer extraordinaire, Terry Hayward, so I’m up extra early to squeeze in a couple of hours along the unspoilt North Norfolk coast, a few miles from his workshop. This is ideal country for my 1984 Ninety: a mixture of marshland, sand dunes, empty beaches and quiet harbours, intersected by narrow country lanes. It’s still dark when I park up on the shingle in the harbour at Burnham Overy Staithe, waiting for the first sign of the rising sun in the east. AT FIRST glance, four of our five tested tools look very similar indeed, but looks are deceiving. Clarke should be applauded for making their tool available for less than £20 and sparing users from bad connections with non-ratchet type crimping tools or normal pliers. It worked very well, albeit with scope for insulated terminals only, so if that’s all you need, look no further. If however, you need a tool with more abilities then more die sets are essential if you are to avoid bodging and with Land Rover electrics, there’s no point in that. Draper’s double-headed die set is compact, clever, works easily and produces decent crimps. Teng’s odd-man-out looking design shouldn’t prevent you considering it for regular use. Sales growth in North America offset by downturn in China WITH A total retail sales of 48,160 vehicles in November 2018, Jaguar Land Rover are down 8 per cent year-on-year reflecting continuing consumer uncertainty following tariff changes and trade concerns. But while sales in China were 50.7 per cent lower than a year ago, sales were up by 18.1 per cent in North America thanks to strong demand for Range Rover models. It signifies Jaguar Land Rover’s best-ever November sales results in the market, and this performance was combined with growth in Europe and the UK where they outperformed the market. Without knowing the year of your Defender I can’t say if the latest motor can be used. However, I would advise sticking with the standard kit for your model because that will work satisfactorily if it’s in good order. If the motor’s electrical performance is down, a simple replacement should solve the problem. It’s not worth overhauling the motor, except to clean it (see below). But first check the drive gear including the motor gearbox, the rack (drive cable) which passes through the tube, and the two wheelboxes. To clean it: if you disconnect the drive cable from the motor gearbox you will be able to feel any restriction in the cable and wheelboxes. AS THE Aussie summer advances and temperatures begin to creep up here in Canberra, my wife and I need little encouragement when it comes to weekend escapes to the coast. In preparation, last month I finally repaired the DIY camper setup I had created in the back of our Defender. I see all sorts of repairs on the vehicles which come into the Norfolk Garage, from exquisite workmanship which would not be out of place on a vintage Rolls-Royce (rare) to dangerous bodgery (depressingly common). But just occasionally I come across something which has me scratching my head and asking a simple question: “Why?” A good example was a late Series IIA diesel which came in on a trailer with the request that I do whatever was needed to get it MoT’d and roadworthy. Pennine Land Rover Club is holding its first trial of 2019 on Sunday January 13 at Catlow near Nelson, Lancashire. The trail will be for both CCV and RTV vehicles and as with most of Pennine LRC events will offer differing sections for each class of vehicle. 87-YEAR-OLD DOROTHY Peters enjoyed a literal drive down memory lane when Land Rover took her off-roading in one of the earliest models in existence. Fulfilling a lifelong dream, the retired Land Rover employee got to go off-road in a vehicle she worked with over 70 years ago. In July, 1946, at the age of 15, Solihull-born Dorothy joined the service department at the Lode Lane factory working alongside the first Series Land Rovers to be built at the site. In June this year, Dorothy went to Land Rover’s 70th celebration event in Solihull, with a photograph album of her time working at the plant. A GOOD mate has just acquired a very nice 1974 Range Rover. It’s totally unmolested and has never been welded, still has its factory-fitted V8 and gearbox, and its wonderfully-worn original paint. The interior is amazing and mostly present and correct, and from the available documentation it appears to have driven less than 50,000 miles before it was laid up for reasons that are lost in the mists of time. It has been in storage for over 25 years and was only available for sale now because the owner had passed away. EVERYONE HAS their favourite Land Rover, whether it’s a lights-behind-the-grille Series I, Defender Td5, or a Freelander. But one of my personal favourites is ‘the Land Rover that never was’ – the Stage Two 100in of the late 1970s. For me, the 100in could have been the perfect Land Rover: a good-looking vehicle that’s neither too long nor too short, and which would be great for towing. Sadly, it was never put into production, but about 36 pre-pro examples were built – and I’m hoping to gather together nine survivors for the Land Rover Legends show at Bicester Heritage this coming May 25-26. The North East Rover Owners Club are again holding their start of the year Brass Monkeys at the Station Land Rover Meet on Sunday January 27 at the world-famous historic Tanfield Railway at Marley Hill near Gateshead. UK Landrover Events is running a 4x4 Tour on Sunday February 3 in the Eden District, which covers both Cumbria and North Yorkshire so takes in both the Lake District and the Dales. The route will include rocky climbs and descents and tight turns, and as it heads east it will open out onto farm tracks and ancient roadways, over the tops of the fells before passing a historic castle and modern artwork. Due to the nature of the route, which is subject to width restrictions, its not suitable for Discovery 3/4/5 and later model Range Rovers and Sports. Ironically, the aim of reducing diesel particulates and nitrogen oxides (nox) by encouraging the switch to petrol resulted in an overall increase of co2 due to petrol’s relatively higher output of the gas. even petrol hybrids fail to produce claimed average fuel consumptions and emissions when used on out of town journeys where their electric drive is largely redundant. rightly, the government has ceased subsidies on new hybrids.
