Research has established that Dong Haichuan (董 海川) (c. 1813–1882) was the creator of Baguazhang (八卦掌). Two of his most famous students are Yin Fu (尹福) (1840–1909), his first student and the one who was with him the longest, and Cheng Tinghua (程廷華) (1848–1900). The major styles of Baguazhang, Yin style and Cheng style, are named after these two students. The Yin family style reflects Yin Fu’s background in the Shaolin/Luohan (少 林/羅漢) Buddhist tradition where the hand position is the ox tongue palm (niushe zhang 牛舌掌) for fast, quick, firm striking and penetration; and natural (heel to toe) footwork with little attention to the toe-in hooking step (koubu 扣步) and the toe-out hooking step (baibu 擺步). Over the past few years, Ronda Rousey has risen through the ranks of the Octagon, amazing all with her sensational demonstrations of throwing. In the process, she has returned the almost forgotten discipline of Judo to the limelight. Some may wonder how this relates to Taijiquan (太极掌). Being able to control an opponent is one way to reduce the aggression of an encounter and steer it in a new direction. In the Fukien art of Ngo Cho Kun (Five Ancestor Fist 五祖拳), control comes through the application of kim so (擒捘) handlocks – first create a bridge with the arm and then immediately lock the opponent. The lock can be of the wrist or arm, either in bent or straight joint positions. The handlock can hold the opponent in place, move or throw him, sweep him, or break his arm. This period is the end of autumn and the beginning of winter. The season turns to cold. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Five Elements Theory, winter belongs to the element of water. Master Huang Baoshan (黄寶珊 1905–1998) is a native of Tianshui city in Gansu province (天水-甘肅), or the district of Qinzhou (秦 州) – the area where the ancient Qin (秦) dynasty originated, and where the mythic Fuxi (伏羲) was supposedly born. Great Master Huang was one of the last masters of the ancient martial arts of Shaolin, known for the Red style of boxing (Hongquan 紅拳) and the stick fighting techniques of Northwestern China (Xibei gunfa 西北功法). Saturday, May 30th, 2015 was a momentous occasion for the Jow Ga system in America. The students and grand students of the late Jow Ga Master Dean Chin got together to remember the Father of the Jow Ga system in America with the first annual memorial banquet. Chin Yuk Din, which was the Master Chin’s proper name, first brought the system to America from Hong Kong in 1968. The original school was located on 8th and I Street North West in the China Town section of Washington, D.C. IN 2004, the First World Traditional Wushu Festival was held in Henan Province. It was a throwback for Mainland China. The tournament scene had been dominated by Modern Wushu competitions since the eighties. This was the first major event that focused on traditional Chinese martial arts. It drew competitors from all around the world to participate in what became a historic celebration of traditional Kung Fu. There were Chinese competitors there too. As the fall season begins, the most promising new TV show on the horizon is AMC’s Into the Badlands, starring former U.S. Wushu pioneer and major Chinese film star, Daniel Wu.
