TAKE A LOOK AT... This month we’re looking at Fair Isle – a traditional knitting technique used to create multi-coloured patterns that takes its name from one of the Shetland Islands off the north coast of Scotland. The style first became popular in the early 20th century, when the Prince of Wales (later to become King Edward VIII), wore tank tops featuring the distinctive pattern. Traditionally, the patterns were worked in a round with two colours in a row and from a small palette of about five. In the early 1990s, designers took inspiration from the technique and the term ‘Fair Isle’ referred generally and loosely to any stranded colour knitting, regardless of its relation to the knitting of Fair Isle or any of the Shetland Islands.
