1902 ELMORE Elmore was founded in Ohio in 1899 and built its first car – a 6hp single-cylinder two-stroke model – in 1902. A two-cylinder model followed soon after, with three- and four-cylinder models added by 1906. In 1909, Elmore was one of several automotive brands acquired by William Durant to form General Motors. Apparently, Durant was drawn to Elmore’s two-stroke engine, which its creators claimed was superior to the four-stroke. The early Elmores from 1902-03 were available as runabouts/roadsters and tourers, but as they were priced above the similar-looking Oldsmobile ‘Curved Dash’ model, sales were somewhat modest – never more than a couple of hundred units annually. This year’s 73rd edition of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California presented a total of 214 significant and exceptional cars from across the US and the world. Entrants came from 16 countries to be part of one of the world’s premier concours events, which this year produced a number of firsts. The most significant first was the Best of Show award going to a Preservation-class car. While preserved (ie., unrestored) cars have been a part of this concours since its earliest years, with their own dedicated class since 2001, no Preservation-class car has taken out the the overall Best of Show - until now. One of the first big driver moves in the Repco Australian Supercars Championship for 2025 has been announced, with Anton De Pasquale to replace Mark Winterbottom at Team 18. After four seasons with Dick Johnson Racing (Shell V-Power Racing Team), 29-year-old De Pasquale will join Charlie Schwerkolt’s squad in what’s being described as a ‘multi-year’ deal. It’s a little-known part of Australia’s automotive manufacturing history, but in the 1960s and early ’70s, one of the great American ‘pony cars’ could be purchased new here, in RHD and with a factory warranty. While a handful of RHD-converted Mustangs had been released in 1967 to promote the then-new XR Falcon GT, the American Motors Javelin was the only pony car from this time to be assembled in Australia, using locally-sourced and produced content. Donington Auctions ‘Collector Car, Number Plate and Horse Drawn Vehicle Auction’ auction on Sunday, 25 August, saw a new auction record set for a six-digit Victorian number plate, with ‘123-456’ selling for $363,000. In the vendor’s possession for the past 40 years, the heritage plate exceeded its pre-auction estimate by more than $60,000. While single, double and triple-digit plates have been auctioned for big amounts in the past, this latest result shows that “modern” six-digit plates are starting to catch up, especially when they feature desirable number and/or letter combinations and sequences. The Supercars silly season has ratcheted up, with Anton De Pasquale’s departure from Dick Johnson Racing (Shell V-Power Racing Team) for Team 18 followed shortly after by confirmation that Brodie Kostecki will replace him. Kostecki, the reigning Supercars Champion, leaves Erebus Motorsport to join incumbent Will Davison at Ford’s homologation team for 2025.
