Restoration on the ‘Chicken Coupe’ XA Falcon GT hardtop that was auctioned by Grays in 2020 and sent to Finch Restorations in SA is continuing, with body repairs well underway, including the fitting of fabricated and NOS panels. BODYWORK CONTINUES As reported previously, the initial phases of this mammoth project involved photographing and documenting every element of the car, cleaning it, stripping it down and cataloguing all components. After the shell was chemical-dipped and given a layer of protective primer, body repair work completed in the first half of the year included replacement metal sections around the A-pillar and base of the windscreen. The Red Bull Ampol Racing pair of Shane van Gisbergen and Garth Tander won the 2022 Repco Bathurst 1000, making it the second win in three years for the pairing. This year’s win was the second for van Gisbergen and the fifth for Tander, as well as the 36th and final victory for Holden at the Great Race. According to Alpine, the ‘Alpenglow’ concept they unveiled at this year’s Paris Motor Show is what motorsport needs to look like tomorrow. The sporting sub-brand of Renault has declared its commitment to “entrenching sustainable development in the motorsport landscape” and the Alpenglow is their initial representation of that. Key to the Alpenglow concept’s “sustainable” ethos is hydrogen power, which produces only steam from combustion and is already in use in fuel cell form in some electric-powered vehicles. The hydrogen that will theoretically power the Alpenglow and other future Alpine road and race cars is apparently even “greener,” as it will be refined in a way that is carbon neutral. An Aston Martin DB5 replica was the highlight of a special, two-part auction conducted by Christie’s in the UK this past September and October to mark six decades of the James Bond film franchise. The ‘Sixty Years of James Bond’ auction combined an online element in October that featured props, costumes, posters and memorabilia from the 007 films, with a live auction on 28 September, where the DB5 was one of several vehicles on offer, including a classic Aston Martin V8 and modern DBS Superleggera, as well as Jaguar, Land Rover and Range Rover stunt vehicles used in the latest film in the James Bond franchise. One of the high-profile wildcard entries at this year’s Repco Bathurst 1000, Craig Lowndes and Declan Fraser defied the doubters to finish strongly, achieving the best finish for a wildcard entry in the history of the Great Race. It may be something of a rarity now, but back in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Renault’s Dauphine was the hottest thing on four wheels, finding buyers in markets well beyond its native France. Unveiled in 1956, the Dauphine took its name from a word that roughly translates to ‘princess’ in English. The name reflected the fact that Renault intended the new car to be a successor to their 4CV (better known as the 750 in Australia), which they regarded as the “queen of the road”.
