Targa Australia P/L has confirmed that this year’s Targa Great Barrier Reef (Targa GBR), scheduled for 2-4 September, will not go ahead. The only surviving competition version of Vauxhall’s 30/98 from the 1920s, chassis #OE1078 is known as the ‘Presentation 30/98’ as it was presented to Boyd Edkins by Vauxhall for his service to the marque here in Australia. One of the early stars of Australian motoring and motorsport, Edkins set multiple city-to-city and cross-country speed records in the early 1920s - a time when the vast majority of roads were still unsealed. The 30/98 presented to Edkins was built in 1924 with a boat-tail Wensum body (optional to the standard Velox body) and had been designed for racing, with a shorter wheelbase than standard and a specially-tuned version of the ‘OE’ 4.2-litre overhead valve fourcylinder engine. While JUST CARS has featured a Cortina ute in the past, that was a home-built conversion. The utility featured here came from the factory – Ford’s South African factory, to be precise. Initially offered on the Cortina TC/TD (aka Mk3) in 1971, the ‘Cortina Pickup’ was very much in the style of the Falcon ute of the period, insofar as it used the front sheetmetal and doors from a sedan, with bespoke panels aft. With a one-tonne capacity and offered in ute and cab chassis form, the Cortina pickup’s styling changed with the introduction of the TE/TF (aka MkIV), and from 1982 was renamed ‘P100’, when exports to the UK and Europe began. A highlight of the upcoming Monterey Car Week in the US will be the auction of Sir Sean Connery’s personal 1964 Aston Martin DB5, in a sale conducted by Broad Arrow Auctions. The DB5 on offer is not one that was used in any of Connery’s numerous outings playing 007 in the James Bond franchise, but rather one he purchased some years later. Months out from the fourth edition of the AXA Sydney Harbour Concours d’Elegance, everything was looking good and everyone was feeling good about the return of Australia’s finest concours event to Sydney in a mostly COVID-free environment. As fate would have it, that confidence was tested in the final weeks leading up to the event’s scheduled start on 3 March. The first challenge faced by organisers was a change of venue. Due to unavoidable circumstances, the event had to relocate from Swifts on Darling Point to Hyde Park Barracks. With the Falcon – and more recently, the Ranger-dominating Ford Australia’s presence, it can sometimes be forgotten that the local arm of the Blue Oval manufactured, assembled and imported a wide range of other models. Before the Falcon arrived in 1960 to challenge Holden, Ford’s volume sellers were small cars, like the Anglia and Prefect, which competed with similarly-sized offerings from Morris and Austin for the title of Australia’s Best Selling Car in the late 1940s and early ‘50s. A super rare sight here in Australia, this Mk2 Capri is in the style of the “Midnight Special” limited edition released by Ford in June, 1975. Based on the Capri S trim level and available with a choice of three engines (1.6-litre and 2.0-litre four-cylinder and a 3.0-litre V6) in the UK, the Midnight Special was better known as the JPS as it carried a black-and-gold livery inspired by the Lotus Formula 1 cars, which at that time were sponsored by John Player Special cigarettes. To mark 25 years since UK motorsport engineering company Prodrive produced the first Impreza to the new-for-1997 World Rally Car rules that replaced the Group A category, a special series of Imprezas will be built in tribute to that rally-winning weapon. Dubbed the ‘Prodrive P25’, the new, limited-edition machine is based on existing first-generation Impreza WRX bodies, but with substantial modifications mechanically, aesthetically and technologically. It may have looked a little shabby, but this Mk1 Escort was packing a punch under its bonnet in the form of a 3.0-litre V6 engine. The product of English tuning firm, Superspeed Conversions Ltd., this Escort was also fitted with modified induction and exhaust systems. It’s alleged this example was sourced by Ford Australia in late 1971 or early 1972 to assess a V6 Escort’s abilities against the smaller, lighter and more nimble Torana GTR XU-1 that was emerging as a threat to the Falcon on the racetrack. Secreted away at Ford’s famous ‘Lot 6’ competition department near the Broadmeadows manufacturing plant, the Escort ultimately proved unsuitable as a Torana-tamer, mainly due to its propensity for destroying gearboxes and diffs.
