On the eve of the Repco Bathurst 1000, Supercars unveiled the first examples of their ‘Gen3’ competition cars, then sent them on parade laps of the Mount Panorama circuit, with Shane van Gisbergen in the all-new Camaro and Anton De Pasquale behind the wheel of the new Mustang. To ensure increased “road relevance,” the Gen3 Supercars bear a closer visual resemblance to the production cars they’re based on than Gen2, with the same dimensions for the doors, roof, bonnet and windows between the road cars and race cars. Ferrari’s Icona family has a new member in the form of the Daytona SP3; a model inspired by Ferrari’s 1-2-3 finish at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1967. Launched in 2018 with the Monza SP1 and SP2, the Icona series take inspiration from particular periods in Ferrari history, but rather than copy the look and style of cars of the past, Ferrari instead aims to “distill the very essence of an era and use it as a springboard to create new concepts that themselves are unique enough to become icons for future generations”. Chrysler is officially leaving the Australian market. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Australia (FCA Australia), the local arm of parent company Stellantis (nee Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), made the announcement on 19 November, citing “the global push towards electrification and focus on SUVs” as the reason. Chrysler’s withdrawal means the end for the 300 sedan in Australia – the only Chrysler model sold locally. Australia was the last right-hand drive market serviced by Chrysler, following exits from South Africa and the UK in recent years, and while 300 production is expected to continue until 2023, it will no longer be manufactured in RHD. The 2021 Repco Bathurst 1000 saw Walkinshaw Andretti United’s Chaz Mostert and Lee Holdsworth take an impressive victory to become the new Kings of the Mountain. For Mostert, it was his second Bathurst win after the epic last-to-first triumph in 2014, while for Holdsworth it was his first win at the Mountain in 18 attempts. It was the 35th win in the Great Race for Holden and the first for Walkinshaw Andretti United (WAU) under its current guise after previously competing under the Holden Racing Team banner, where they achieved seven Bathurst wins. Porsche have concluded their celebration of 70 years in Australia with a gala event in Melbourne attended by 450 special guests - and a special 911 created exclusively for the Australian market. The next-generation Toyota 86, rebadged as ‘GR86’ after taking on Gazoo Racing branding, made its Australian debut at the Repco Bathurst 1000 in December, but won’t reach Australian Toyota dealerships for at least another six months.
