The CoreStaff Darwin SuperSprint round of this year’s Virgin Australia Supercars Championship saw Scott McLaughlin record his 50th win in the category. The milestone victory for the New Zealander came in his eighth year in the championship. After winning both the V8 Super Tourer championship in his native New Zealand and the Dunlop V8 Supercar Series feeder category here in Australia in 2012, McLaughlin joined Supercars full time in 2013. In his first season in the category, McLaughlin drove a VE Commodore for Garry Rogers Motorsport and achieved his first two race wins. There seems to be a growing demand for outstanding examples of 1950s and ‘60s “longroofs” ie. station wagons, as evidenced by the interest in this 1960 Dodge Polara nine-passenger wagon at Geared Online. Finished in Fawn and Cocoa metallic paint with a Cocoa interior, this Polara wagon was factory-fitted with Chrysler’s biggest engine for the year, a 383ci V8, matched to a Torqueflite 3-speed auto. Jaguar Classic, the in-house heritage, restoration and special projects division of Jaguar, will produce an extremely limited run of E-Type coupes and roadsters to mark the 60th Anniversary next year of the original E-Type’s introduction. Announced on 18 August, the new General Motors Special Vehicles (GMSV) operation will essentially be a continuation of current HSV operations under a new name, aimed at ensuring General Motors products continue to be available here, despite GM abandoning RHD markets globally. Repco has signed a new sponsorship deal with the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, securing naming rights for the annual Bathurst 1000. Already the Official Automotive Parts Retailer for Supercars, the five-year deal will see Repco replace Supercheap Auto (who in turn replaced Bob Jane T-Marts) as naming rights sponsor for the annual Mount Panorama enduro, starting from 2021. The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) has pulled the plug on the 2020 edition of the aftermarket industry trade show in Las Vegas, announcing on 5 August that this year’s event would not go ahead. The cancellation is the first in the show’s 53-year history. As late as the end of July, plans were in place for the show to still go ahead on 3-6 November, with mandatory face masks, temperature checks and other measures in place. However, at an event that attracts more than 150,000 people annually, even the most rigid social distancing and public safety measures would be almost impossible to enforce. The closure of the Binalong Motor Museum presented a rare opportunity to purchase a range of collectable cars, motorcycles, memorabilia, petroliana, garagenalia and even aviation-related items when the museum’s collection went to auction this past July. Located in rural NSW, the Binalong Motor Museum was the brainchild of John Fitzpatrick and Stuart Saunders, who had the facility purpose built to both display their collections and serve as a workshop for their restoration projects.
