After releasing a Charger with all-wheel drive, Dodge has applied the same all-paw ability to their Challenger muscle car. The Challenger GT was first presented in concept form at the 2015 SEMA aftermarket show. That concept featured wheelarch extensions and an aggressive look, but the production version is more sedate in appearance. Described by Dodge as the first two-door American muscle car with all-wheel drive, the Challenger GT was presented in December, with production for the North American market underway by the time you read this. Shannons final auction for 2016, held in Melbourne on 5 December, saw a Ferrari achieve the top price, but strong results for a number of classic Aussie Fords and a bulletproof Bentley attracted equal attention. The auction, the last to be held in the company’s Cheltenham space before Shannons relocates to new premises in Heatherton, saw a 91 per cent clearance rate, with a number of consignments selling above estimate. Leading the way was the aforementioned Ferrari, a 1983 308 GTSi targa coupe, finished in the uncommon (for a Ferrari) blue. Sold new in the UK, the Quattrovalvole (four valve) version of the 308 came to Australia in 2011. If you’ve never heard of it, ‘Art of Speed’ is Malaysia’s #1 custom culture event and Gearheadz Travel can take you there. Held annually in late May (actual dates vary) at the Malaysia Agro Exhibition Park just outside Kuala Lumpur, Art of Speed features custom cars and motorcycles of all types, from classics to modern. When you think about it, Dodge turned out some pretty desirable machines during the peak of the muscle car era. There was the Charger and Challenger, of course, as well as the mighty Charger Daytona, with other brawny offerings back in the day including the Coronet in R/T and Super Bee form, and even the Dart GTS. Less well-known are the Dart Swinger with a 340 V8 and the Demon 340 fielding the same powerplant. A rare beast in the USA, there are even fewer examples of the Demon 340 – or any Dodge Demon, for that matter – in Australia. For Gooding & Company’s 2017 Scottsdale sale, to be held on 20-21 January at Scottsdale Fashion Square, there are a number of desirable Ferraris consigned (including a 1966 275 GTB and 1965 500 Superfast), as well as a genuine 1975 Lancia Stratos HF Stradale, but a “home grown” machine that’s the match for these machines visually, if not financially, is also up for auction, in the form of a 1969 AMC AMX/3 concept. The thirteenth annual Bonhams’ London to Brighton Sale, held on the eve of the annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, saw the sale of ten veteran cars, all of which were eligible to partake in the famous UK car event for pre-1905 automobiles. Star of the 4 November auction was a 1904 Renault Type N-B ‘swing seat’ tonneau. Powered by a 14/20hp four-cylinder sidevalve engine of just over 3.0 litre capacity, the N-B featured a 3-speed transmission, rack and pinion steering, magneto ignition and both transmission and rear axle brakes. The Type N-B auctioned was also fitted with a completely detachable ‘dais’ roof that offers better weather protection than the usual soft roof coverings, while the ‘swing seat’ tag comes from the front passenger seat, which rotates to allow…

Mossgreen’s third major auction for 2016, conducted on 27 November in Melbourne, set a record for the highest – by dollar value – auction held in the Southern Hemisphere in 2016. Conducted in the showrooms of Lorbek Luxury Cars in Port Melboune, the auction saw 25 classic and collectable cars consigned, as well as a handful of classic motorcycles and dozens of automobilia items and rare spare parts. VETERANS AND CLASSICS Oldest of the cars consigned was a 1911 Hotchkiss Type AB Serie 1. The Type AB replaced the slightly less powerful Type T in 1911 and featured a 3.7-litre four cylinder engine, the patented Hotchkiss drive system and the company’s distinctive barrel-style bonnet and circular radiator. Toyota has released an updated version of their 86 sports coupe, with styling and performance–oriented changes applied to both the GT and GTS versions. Both variants receive a stiffer chassis, retuned suspension, improved aerodynamics and a new “track” driving mode, which Toyota says is aimed at “sharpening the driving focus” of the car, while manual transmission versions receive increased power and torque. These changes, which come with minor price rises, are aimed at addressing the sales slide the 86 has suffered in 2016. After selling 3,006 units in 2015, only 1,801 examples of the 86 had been sold up to October, 2016. The GT lineup now starts at $30,790 for the GT manual, rising to $33,090 for auto. A new Shelby Mustang racer made its official debut at Indianapolis in December, in the form of the ‘Shelby FP350S’. Designed for TransAm, SCCA and NASA motorsports competition in the US, the FP350S is a turn-key racer that follows in the wheeltracks of the FR500C and modern Boss 302R, as well as the championship-winning Shelby GT350R-C and GT4 Mustang that was unveiled at SEMA last year. Developed by Ford Performance (hence the ‘FP’ designation), the FP350S is based around a modified, seam welded Mustang unibody chassis with a front splitter, adjustable carbon fibre rear wing and a six-point FIA-compliant roll cage as standard. Starting an engine is the most demanding thing a vehicle battery does, so doing this repeatedly can place massive strain on it.
