This year’s Goodwood Revival in the UK was significant for a number of reasons, not least of which was a special celebration marking the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, but what drew worldwide interest to this year’s retro-themed motorsport, motoring and pre-1966 culture event was a gathering of the Shelby Cobra Daytona coupes: the first time all six of the AC Cobra roadster-based cars had been brought together in the one place. BUILT by BARRIS

The output of cars from George Barris and Barris Kustom Industries in California has been prodigious, and thanks to the appearance of the ‘King of Kustoms’ at Meguiar’s MotorEx this year, there are now a lot more Aussies that know his name. But even given that, it’s a surprise to see a genuine Barris-customised car in Australia, like this 1951 Ford Custom coupe belonging to Danny Canal. Ask any hardcore Ford fan to name their favourite Aussie Blue Oval car, and it’s odds on they’ll pick a beast from the period covered by ‘Ford: The Muscle Car Classics 1969-79’. From Rockpool Publishing, the same team behind ‘Muscle Car Mania’ and ‘Ford vs Holden’, this recently-released title focuses on Australia’s high-performance Fords from the golden era, starting with the XW GT-HO Phase I of 1969, and signing off with 1978’s XC Cobra. Granted, the Cobra wasn’t anywhere near as hairy-chested as its predecessors, but it certainly signalled the end of an era for racetrack-inspired and performance-oriented Ford vehicles in this country. AUDI 60/75: A WHOLE NEW WORLD

Until 1965 the automotive products of the Auto Union GmbH were always known as DKW and they all had been powered by two-stroke engines. However, these were becoming unacceptable and while the company was under the wing of Daimler-Benz AG a program was initiated to redevelop the DKW F102 into the Audi F103 which was released at the Frankfurt IAA in September 1965. The new F103 model featured one significant and important difference – it would have a new OHV four-stroke engine designed by Ludwig Krauss. It was a remarkable engine in four ways – its extraordinarily high 11.2:1 compression, combustion chamber in the piston crown, angled intake ports designed to induce considerable swirl to the incoming fuel mixture, and it was tilted over at 40° in the engine bay.…

BROCK CARS COMING TO DREAMWORLD

A new series of motorsport-themed attractions are set to be unveiled at Dreamworld this summer, including what’s billed as the world’s largest collection of Peter Brock race cars. Plans were unveiled at the start of September for the new interactive motorsports precinct, which features a high-tech display for 30 genuine and replica Brock cars, as well as a motorsport-themed alteration of the Cyclone rollercoaster, V8 Supercar racing simulators, eateries, a bar, retail areas and more. The new multi-million dollar motorsports precinct covers 6,000 square metres within Dreamworld and is set to open after Christmas. RHD Mustang assembly is now officially underway at Ford’s Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan, with the first examples expected to reach Australia before the end of 2015. Pre-production LHD Mustangs have been touring Australian Ford dealerships for the past few months, building up interest in the sixth-generation ‘pony car’ before it officially arrives here in RHD form. Since its inception in 1997, the ‘Bay to Birdwood Classic’ run to the National Motor Museum has become a huge hit with auto enthusiasts throughout South Australia, and a popular companion event to the Bay to Birdwood Run that was first held in 1980.
