Paying homage to the famous Shelby GT350-H Mustang hire cars first offered by Hertz in 1966, Hertz Australia has announced the release of new, Shelby GT350-H-inspired Mustangs as part of their ‘Adrenaline Collection’. “We are excited to offer our customers a unique experience with these new Mustangs,” explained Damien Shaw, Hertz Australia Country Manager. “They will have the chance to drive a bespoke sports car, renowned for its powerful engine and timeless design, from Hertz’s Adrenaline Collection.” Limited to just six units Australia-wide, the rentals are all based on the current Mustang GT coupe with the 5.0 litre V8 and new 10-speed automatic transmission. When HSV launched their RHD-converted Camaro late last year, it brought no small amount of attention. But despite a claimed build run of 550 units of the 2018 model, it’s fair to say the remanufactured Chevy has been a lot less visible on our roads compared to the Mustang, which has almost become ubiquitous here. That may change this year, as HSV has released details and pricing on the new, 2019-spec Camaro 2SS, with a new ZL1 version being added to the lineup, too. The 2SS is likely (but not certain) to be built in higher numbers than last year’s total, while the ZL1 will be much more exclusive, and will probably account for a fraction of HSV’s Camaro output this year. This year’s 30th Phillip Island Classic Festival of Motorsport, held on the Labour Day long weekend in March, was a fine display of historic touring car racing. Good weather greeted the 68 entrants - 36 Under-3 Litres and 32 Over-3 Litres - for Friday qualifying and stayed all weekend. With no safety car interruptions, full-on racing was the order of the weekend in both divisions, too. The first example of the 2019 version of Honda’s NSX supercar is now in Australia, defined by new design touches, new paint and trim options and improved vehicle dynamics. Following its presentation in the US last August, the first RHD, Australian-spec MY19 NSX reached our shores in February, just in time for Honda Australia’s 50th birthday celebrations. Finished in new-for-2019 Thermal Orange Pearl premium paint (one of eight paint options for 2019), the first new NSX delivered here is currently touring the country, appearing at Honda dealerships and special events. The Falcon GT Nationals is just around the corner, and host club for this year’s 18th biennial event, the Falcon GT Club of South Australia, are promising GT heaven in the Festival State this Easter. “This is the first Nationals in South Australia since 2009,” explained event chairman, Hugh Westphalen. “And we believe our Nationals will be one of the best ever.” From the first XR GT of 1967 to the last FG GTF from 2014, more than 300 classic and modern Ford Falcon GTs have signed up for the event, which will take place from 19 to 22 April (Good Friday to Easter Monday). FOR SALE As far as hot rod builds go, a ’32 Ford, and in particular a ’32 Ford 5-window or 3-window coupe, is about as traditional as it gets. There’s pretty much an entire industry devoted to servicing this particular model, with everything from repro chassis to bodies (in ‘glass and steel), interiors and all the running gear to match. As popular and widespread as ’32 Ford coupe hot rods are, there are examples that, through high standards of finish, touches of individuality or both, manage to rise above the pack. Bonhams Amelia Island auction this past March saw million-dollar sales, including the Brabham-Cosworth BT26A previewed in JUST CARS #278. The third of four BT26 chassis built, the auctioned car started life in 1968 with the Ron Tauranac-designed spaceframe chassis and Australian-developed Repco V8 engine, but poor results with that engine through the ’68 season saw it replaced by a Ford-Cosworth DFV V8 for 1969. Jacky Ickx was a new recruit to the Brabham F1 team for 1969 and would drive both the third and fourth BT26A chassis built. Chassis #3 was driven by Ickx to third place in the French Grand Prix and second in the Mexican Grand Prix. Since it was first held in 1998, the annual Queenscliff Rod Run has become a must-do on the summer calendar for rodders far and wide. The combination of a full programme of activities, professional organisation and a great seaside location has seen rodders, along with custom and classic car owners, return year after year. While the Rod Run’s been a regular success in the past, the 2019 event, held from the 1st to the 3rd of February, was arguably one of the best ever.
