With the Falcon bowing out of Supercar racing for 2019, the Mustang appears to be ready to take up the Ford banner following recent testing. At the start of November, a Supercar-spec Mustang prototype was tested at both Queensland Raceway and Phillip Island. Built by DJR Team Penske, with input from Tickford Racing, Ford Performance, Ford Australia and the Ford Asia-Pacific Design Studio, the prototype has been in development for more than a year, according to DJR Team Penske Team Principal, Ryan Story. “To see Mustang on track for the first time is a great milestone, as we’ve been working on this project in earnest since November last year. Alpine was a dead name until recently, but in the 1960s and ‘70s it was a massive force in European rallying and Le Mans. The name and factory are owned by Renault, so there’s proper big-company expertise here. Affordable two-seat sports cars don’t sell in big numbers and few manufacturers have the courage to try them as a business. The Alpine is even more committed than the Mazda MX-5 or Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ. It’s mid-engined, and its body is entirely purpose-designed aluminium. In a further celebration of 70 years since the release of the XK 120, Jaguar has built two rally cars based on the F-Type convertible. A popular and successful road car, the XK 120 was also rallied with some success in the 1950s, including outright wins in the pan-European Tulip Rally (1951) and RAC Rally of Great Britain (1953). An XK 120 also completed the tough Alpine Rally three years in succession from 1950. The pair of F-Type tributes use design touches already explored on the F-Type Chequered Flag Limited Edition (see lead News item) and have also been mechanically worked over by Jaguar Design and Engineering. Lamborghini’s Squadra Corse racing division unveiled the ‘SC18’ on 19 November; a model they say is the first one-off racer in the division’s history. Built to customer order by Squadra Corse, with input from Lamborghini’s Centro Stile in-house design studio, the SC18 is road-legal, but was created specifically for use on the racetrack. Powered by the same tweaked V12 used in the Aventador SVJ, the SC18 puts out 574kW (770hp) at 8500rpm and 720Nm of torque (531lb/ft) at 6750rpm. The ‘Independent Shifting Rod’ optimized seven-speed gearbox delivers all that power to all four wheels, while a model-specific exhaust system provides what Lamborghini says is a unique design and sound. McLaren Special Operations (MSO) has produced a unique 720S using a ‘stealth’ design theme. Built to commission from McLaren London and inspired by one of four themes the 720S was presented in at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, the one-off does anything but blend in, with Sarthe Grey paint (from the MSO Defined range) highlighted with Vermillion Red coachlines. Sarthe Grey is said to be inspired by the McLaren F1 GTR that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995, with the painting process, including the hand-painted red details, taking almost 200 hours. The red highlights carry through to the 10-spoke Super Lightweight wheels, which add Vermillion Red highlights to the Satin Black finish. A 1956 Ford Thunderbird originally belonging to Marilyn Monroe came close to setting a new record price for the model at a recent California auction. As previewed in JUST CARS #274, the car was bought new by ‘Marilyn Monroe Productions’ in December, 1955, and came highly specified with the ‘power pack’ 312ci V8, Fordomatic auto, power assistance for the steering and brakes, electric windows and power-operated seats. Finished in Raven Black with a complementary soft top and removable hardtop with the distinctive porthole windows, the car was reportedly driven personally by Monroe on a number of occasions before it was gifted by the Hollywood star to a colleague’s son in 1962. The Mazda MX-5 and I haven’t always seen eye-to-eye or, rather, the hype surrounding it hasn’t always made a lot of sense to me. Don’t get me wrong, the theory behind the MX-5 is sound and the first two version of the thing were awesome but I reckon it kind of lost its way after that, becoming heavier and softer. Not everyone will agree, of course, but I felt the same way when the MX-5 RF was launched a little while back. The roof was a work of art but the car still felt sluggish and soft and was a step or two behind the Abarth version. Not anymore. According to Peugeot, the autonomous and alternative energy cars destined to hit our roads in the near future are boring. The French carmaker believes that future technologies should always be at the service of automotive pleasure and that “an exciting future is a future that gives you the choice over the silhouette, the type of propulsion or driving.” Their take on that choice, and the drive to make the future “un-boring”, was presented at October’s Paris Motor Show in the form of the e-Legend Concept.
