GM Holden’s Design Team has explored what they call “the technological potential of the future” with a virtual design study called the ‘Time Attack Concept’. Released on the eve of this year’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, the Time Attack Concept is an entirely virtual project, using what Holden calls sophisticated simulation technology and the expertise of their Melbourne Design Studio. While something based on the Commodore Supercar would have been an obvious choice for such a design study, Holden instead chose a one-lap sprinter, aka a Time Attack car. Following its presentation in concept form (see JUST CARS #272), Porsche has confirmed that the 911 Speedster will return on the current (991) platform as a limited-production model. Production will start in the first half of 2019, with numbers limited to 1,948 units – referring to the launch year of the first Porsche seven decades ago. At the Paris Motor Show in October, Porsche unveiled what they described as the second 911 Speedster Concept, finished in Guards Red paint evocative of the 1988 Speedster that was the first offered on the 911 platform. Two weeks after Lloyd’s Classic Car Auctions set a record price for an Australian-made car of $2.1 million, they almost bettered it when another iconic example of Aussie motoring came up for auction. The car, a 1972 Ford XA Falcon GT-HO Phase IV, was one of only four produced by Ford before the famous ‘Supercar Scare’ ended its development, along with that of rivals from Holden and Chrysler. Richards obsession with Mk2 Cortina’s started in the UK over 37 years ago when he was just 15 years old. He fell in love with his neighbours’ Jet Black Mk2 Cortina GT. Richards first car was a burgundy black cherry Mk2 Cortina 2 door 1600 GT. There have only been very brief periods since than that he has owned one. Now settled in Australia, he has now shipped out the two Cortina’s he previously restored whilst living in England. Demand for Ford’s GT supercar has seen production increase from the original commitment of 1,000 to 1,350. The additional 350 is due, Ford says, to exceptional interest. Since launch last year, demand has outstripped supply by six to one. That response surprised even Ford, who confirmed the production increase for the 482kW and 746Nm V6-powered supercar on 18 October. “By extending the Ford GT production run for a limited period, we’re able to maintain the exclusivity of the ultra-desirable supercar while offering the ownership experience to a greater number of customers in addition to the 80 Ford GT owners in Europe who’ve taken delivery of their bespoke car to-date,” said Hermann Salenbauch, director, Ford Performance.
