Autumn has arrived and now we’re definitely starting to spend more time indoors in our cozy homes. Many of us also start thinking of Christmas now, so this edition of the magazine offers you some inspiration on Advent decoration items, amongst other things. You might want to consider inviting Christmas into your home now but it’s still a bit too early to go all-in. Whilst we’re waiting, we can prepare lots of wonderful autumn wreaths that can be used as Christmas wreaths later. We’re visiting photographer and influencer Mari Magnusson who lives with her family in a former school in the town of Enköping close to Stockholm in Sweden. Mari loves recycling and the house has mainly been furnished with flea market treasures. Many of the items were bought abroad because the family used to live in England and Australia. And they all love to travel. Mari shows us the big room where she does all her creative projects. This room is also her studio. Right now, she’s getting ready to decorate the home for Christmas. She always uses lots of greenery because it’s available on her doorstep, and now she’s got plenty of space for all her collections in these big, former classrooms. Patchwork has become popular again – not least because using fabric left-overs is sustainable and a way of avoiding waste, but also because it’s such a beautiful way of expressing your creativity. These amazing and unique fabric stars and "Christmas trees" are made by Doris Schäfer from Germany. She makes them out of the finest old textiles. Some of the stars are made of scraps of handwoven linen that dates back to year 1900, approximately. Others are made of pieces of fabric from an old christening gown, and antique, crocheted insertions and lace are used on some of them. Janne created this fantastic Advent calendar in her workshop because she wanted to inspire all those of us who love recycling. She searched her loft for a nice, old frame, and she found a selection of funny items in her cupboards and in the second-hand stores. Amongst other things, she got some old bingo cards, old pixies made of pipe cleaners, old Christmas cards etc. She wrapped the small presents in recycled paper and then she adorned them in various ways, depending on size and possibilities. Everything that grows in nature and in the late autumn garden is just as beautiful as all the summer flowers. This includes anything from various wonderful, beautiful grasses by the roadside to the most fantastic dahlias. Can you imagine anything more beautiful than this? The autumn colors and structures are just so special when winter is approaching. Following several months of blossoming flowers, nature now offers you lots of fascinating seedheads. They’re simple and therefore beautiful. You can use them to make a beautiful bouquet and the seedheads are all you need. Bringing a bundle of grasses or seedheads into the home dresses your home for autumn. When winter approaches, most of us notice that our hands and lips need more protection against the rough weather conditions. Making your very own beauty products for this purpose is very easy. Rich, nourishing hand lotion: 1.4 oz (40 g) shea butter, 0.7 oz (20 g) cocoa butter, 0.4 oz (10 g) beeswax, 0.4 oz (10 g) almond oil, 5 drops of essential oil (we used lavender) Weigh out all the ingredients. Pour them into a bowl above a water bath and melt them whilst stirring. Carefully pour the lotion into a glass container and allow it to cool off. Until recently, Jette and Jan were living in the small village of Thorsø in a former furniture upholstery workshop where they had their private home and their business. Sadly, they had to close the business and sell the house this year because Jette got sick and they were experiencing financial problems after the pandemic – just like so many other small businesses. Jane’s Advent decorations and wreaths are made with all the materials that she’s been growing in her cut flower garden throughout the year, combined with a bit of spruce from the forest. This wreath has been made on a straw wreath. Jane has used a selection of dried flowers in various shades of gold, including dried hydrangea, cudweeds in golden and cream-like colors, eucalyptus, dried amaranth, larch cones and calocephalus. You can use this wreath as it is or combined with candles such as a square candle in the middle. Vaulted ceilings, Venetian flooring and four-poster beds: Anna and Michele have turned an old building from the 19th century in the heart of the Italian town of Treviso into a charming Bed & Breakfast. Apart from the beauty of the building, they fell in love with the history of the place. This building is standing on rubble from a small church. Already back in the 18th century, this was a sanctuary and a place of conversion for the harlots of that time, and the name "Le Convertite" was inspired by this story. When we’re approaching the beginning of November – meaning, by the end of October – Anette starts to decorate and adorn her home for Christmas both indoors and outdoors. She’s been planning and collecting items for a long time before that. This year’s collection of natural materials decides what she’ll use when she starts decorating. Anette has always been fascinated by both big and small cones so she’s always got plenty of those in bowls, on dishes and in pots. She combines twigs, moss, bulbs, angels and antlers with old flea market treasures with patina to make some wonderful creations. One of our loyal readers, Eva-Lena, told me about this amazing project last summer. She’s been working in Athens, Greece, for many years, being part of the management team behind a non-profit project called "Threads of Hope Hellas". The goal of this project is to create life-changing opportunities through education and jobs. Women are invited to participate in a scheme where they don’t only learn how to sew but also develop other abilities. Those women come from a world where they’ve been forced into prostitution through human trafficking. Prostitution is legal in Greece but most of the women working as prostitutes aren’t doing that voluntarily but are being tricked or forced into this trade. Autumn offers lots of colors and you can still find many flowers in the garden. Dahlias, roses, asters, golden leaves on the bushes and also berries. Just use as much of it as possible in bouquets and decorations before frost sets in. Tie wreaths and make decorations in various centerpieces and on dishes. Château de la Motte Husson is a French castle that was built in the historicism style and is located in the small royal borough of Martigné-sur-Mayenne. From the 1100s to the 1300s, a small fortress was located here. The current building was constructed between 1868 and 1874 and so it’s relatively new, compared to many other French castles. Today, the castle is owned by Dick and Angel Strawbridge who bought it back in 2015. Since then, many of us have enjoyed watching the couple in the TV series "Escape to the Chateau" where we’ve been able to join the family as they renovated and rebuilt the castle and did all kinds of other creative projects. Actually, I’m not particularly good at making wreaths but I’m passionate about trying it out every year. It’s just such a cozy activity. This wreath is one of the very simple ones but that doesn’t mean that making it is less cozy. I had an olive tree in my garden that needed a bit of cutting back, and instead of getting rid of the twigs, I made these small wreaths for my glass doors. I bought the metal wreath in a supermarket but you can also make your own out of strong steel wire. I tied small twigs with fresh olive leaves onto the entire wreath using thin, green steel wire. SALMON SNACKS A small but marvelous appetizer that consists of slices of bread with cream cheese on top. The snacks have been decorated with sliced avocado, smoked salmon, a bit of sour cream, "roe" and herbs. The combination of rich avocado, salmon and sour cream is extremely nice. The beautiful, golden autumn colors look so amazing when combined with pumpkins. Jo has dried some hydrangeas and placed them in big vases on the table, and she’s also collected some golden and brown leaves and cones in her garden for her Halloween table. She’s laid this raw plank table with bast place mats and white, romantic chinaware that create a wonderful contrast to all the rustic elements. Old, rustic boxes full of pumpkins, baskets full of golden autumn flowers and oranges offer a nice welcome to the guests by the entrance. You’ve just got to have a great deal of respect for a young woman who decides to follow her dream of setting up a business which is extremely sustainable and socially responsible. Back in 2018, Lisbeth started this project as a creative home project next to her studies because her son needed some lighting in his bedroom. Lisbeth made two lamps out of recycled water pipes as a simple, efficient and economically sustainable alternative. The son got one of the lamps and the other one was put up for sale.
