When my wonderful niece, Lærke, wanted to marry her sweetheart, Anders, the couple knew exactly where and how to organize the party. As her aunt, I can’t help but being just a little bit proud of her. Lærke is very interested in recycling and interior design so obviously, the wedding had to be held in a special place that would reflect those interests. Here at Kærby Mølle, we’ve got two living rooms. One of them is our TV room, the other one is a bay window – or a kind of landing – at the top of the house where we’ve got lots of windows and a wonderful view of the lake and the creek. We decided to turn this area into a conservatory with lots of plants and old wicker furniture, allowing us to sit and read, enjoy the view, take a nap or invite guests for a glass of wine. Tine and her husband Tommy bought a wonderful, old town house in the middle of the Danish town of Kerteminde. They’ve been renovating it for a year and they’re almost done. They’ve done their best to preserve the original style and amongst other things, Tommy, who’s a carpenter, has made the beautiful radiator covers for several of the rooms. He’s also added stucco and wooden flooring to reflect the original style of the house. These berries mean nothing but pure nostalgia and good memories to me. The summers spent at grandma’s and grandpa’s were full of both. My grandparents had a huge kitchen garden and walking around with them, collecting and eating lots of fresh berries, was something special. Afterwards, I’d help grandma in the kitchen as she made redcurrant jelly and compote for the winter. This was just so much “summer in a jar”. You can enjoy the berries from one single bush all winter. Try using fresh redcurrants for layered cakes or other types of breads and cakes – they are absolutely delicious. Being able to host a party outdoors is just wonderful. When the table is surrounded by big trees and lots of plants, you don’t need much more to create the perfect atmosphere. This party takes place below a porch roof and the table has been put up around the big tree. The guests sit on cushions and bales of straw. The table has been laid in a rustic style with wooden disks by each cover and moss. The lighting includes lots of lanterns and tealight candles in candleholders. The beautiful, colorful decorations have been made with roses and hydrangea, amongst other flowers, in old teapots and vases, and some of them have been adorned with moss. Hydrangea is one of the most beautiful bushes in the garden. It’s available in many sorts and colors, it can grow in pots or directly in the soil, and it’ll return year after year with lots of big, beautiful flower balls. It’ll blossom throughout the entire late summer and autumn. The flowers are great for collecting and making wreaths but you can also just dry them and place them in a vase. If you’d like to make wreaths, it’s much easier to make them as long as the flowers are fresh and the stems are soft. The wreaths will last all winter and you might want to spray glue onto them and then sprinkle glitter on top to make nice decoration items for Christmas. You can make wreaths in all…

I always try to bring nature into my bouquets. You can find so many beautiful plants in nature – for free. This includes grasses, grains, weeds and wild flowers. It’s a good idea to pick a handful of oats in the field but remember to ask the owner for permission first. Oat looks wonderful in bouquets and wreaths all year round. Pick it when it’s at its best, shining in shades of ocher and gold. Use it straight away or hang it to dry and use it later. It’ll last for a very long time. In late summer, there are lots of things to do in the cut flower garden. You can still pick lots of flowers, both fresh ones and for drying, and there are plenty of seeds to collect. Once you’ve collected your seeds, you’ve got to dry them first and then store them in a dry and cool place. You’ll also want to store your dried flowers in a dry and preferably slightly darker place. Then you’ve got plenty of flowers for the most wonderful bouquets and wreaths with dried flowers in autumn and winter. Anne-Dorte and her partner live in the town of Langeskov on Funen in Denmark in a house that’s actually just a standard detached house. Anne-Dorte loves the light brocante style with a hint of rough and she’d like to show us that you can easily furnish even a standard house in this style. This big, beautiful, red house from 1849 is a Swedish “Västerbottensgård” - an old farm. The house features two levels, a beautiful veranda and double doors for a warm welcome. This classic “Västerbottensgård” looks very inviting. This is where Eva and her husband Stefan live. They have a large living room featuring a big fireplace and several sitting areas. Three big windows create a fantastic inflow of light in the room. The wooden flooring has been painted white and the walls have been painted light-gray. Eva loves natural materials such as linen and jute, and she’s got lots of wicker items as well. She often exchanges the pillow covers and blankets on the sofa according to season. This wonderful cushion has been made by Annette Dypping Hindse-Nielsen who produces knitting and crochet instructions. She calls it “a warm hug” and we’ll share the instructions with you right here. The cushion measures 15.7 x 15.7 inches (40 x 40 cm) and was made with Garnpusher’s Mohair Edition no. 4 in the color “ecru”, 5.2 oz (150 g), and Garnpusher’s Supersoft in the color “bleached white”, 3.5 oz (100 g), using a crochet hook no. 4. The pattern is made with chain stitches, single crochets, half double crochets and double crochets. There are two versions of this pattern. Being allowed to visit Dick and Angel at Chateau de la Motte Husson to write an article for our small-scale, Danish magazine is absolutely amazing. It’s very hard to describe this experience in words and it’s impossible to not be captured by the beauty of this place. August has finally arrived and lots of summer flowers are blossoming on meadows, in the fields and by the roadside. Is there anything more beautiful than summer here in the north? I don’t think so. And there’s also nothing cozier to do on a summer day than going for a walk on a quiet gravel road between the forest and the fields, picking flowers for a bouquet full of roadside flowers, feeling the heat from the sun and enjoying all the different smells. Daisy, camomile, hornet, meadowsweet, ground elder and spreading bellflower are some of my favorites for the summer bouquets. Placing them in an old ceramic vase looks particularly nice. Now we’ve arrived in the “wild west” where the big barn has been prepared for a party with flower decorations in old cowboy boots, straw on the floor and horses chewing their hey in the horse stalls. This is a very charming setting. Various tables and chairs have been painted, and colorful rugs on the floor create the perfect backdrop. Mixed chinaware and colorful late summer flowers underline the informal atmosphere. Outside you’ll find an open fire where you can prepare twist bread and roast your marshmallows, and this is a nice place for both children and adults to be once it gets dark. We’re always surrounded by all kinds of chemicals. In particular, cleaning detergents can contain lots of chemicals that are harmful to the environment and to us. Therefore, it’s a good idea to make such detergents yourself. It’s quite simple and very cheap. Let me show you a few of the recipes here. SHAVING YOUR LEGS Use coconut oil instead of shaving cream. This oil adds moisture to the skin, has an antibacterial effect and reduces skin irritation. You only need a few drops to make your skin nice and soft afterwards. Visiting Marie is an extraordinary experience. She lives with her husband in the town of Hyltarp just outside Svedala in Skåne County in Sweden, and she’s created a unique universe in the shape of a miniature world. When I saw some pictures of Marie’s creations for the first time, I thought – what a wonderful home and a perfect place for making an article for the magazine.
