There are lots of wonderful summer cottages in Denmark that have been furnished by the owners to make them special. The company "Landfolk" wants to make such houses available to people who appreciate aesthetics and who value a cozy setting as part of their holiday experience. The company is run by 7 entrepreneurs, including Camilla and Cecilie who’re in this picture. The philosophy behind the company is that because the company owners have been disappointed by boring summer cottage settings themselves, lots of other people must have had similar experiences. Located in the middle of the forest in Brandenburg in former Eastern Germany, a 1-hour drive from Berlin, this house is almost a secret. The big, impressive spruces that surround the house are as tall as 66 ft (20 m). The house is also located right between two beautiful lakes. The peace and idyll here are almost impossible to describe. The owners, Rikke and Melanie, renovated the entire place in 2019 and, amongst other things, they installed a new kitchen and added new flooring in the entire house. This is a typical bungalow from former Eastern Germany. When they took over the house, they kept the sprayed concrete front and painted the rest of the house black. It’s been a long time since we’ve been able to visit our beloved markets. Many of us have missed those trips so much. Sanne offers us some tips on nice markets in Holland and Belgium. For many years now, there has been an increasing interest in knitting and crocheting – also amongst young people. But right now, a new trend has been added to it: embroidery. We came upon this trend and thought: "that can’t be so difficult…" and then we tried it out without any prior experience or knowledge. We had lots of fun and it was actually very easy. Probably, there is a needlework teacher out there thinking: "oh my God, that’s not according to the book!" but you know what? That doesn’t matter. This small summer cottage in the town of Tversted by the North Sea offers a true summer cottage spirit. The characteristic, wooden panel walls have been painted white and Liselotte has furnished the house with lots of wicker furniture, light textiles and personal details. Liselotte and Morten bought this summer cottage in November 2020 and they spent the first winter renovating it. The big windows facing the garden and the big, roofed terrace, which can be used during most of the year, make you feel commune with nature. One of the talented and creative women working with us here at the editorial office, Anette, have come up with these fabulous ideas on how to be creative during your summer holiday. All you need is a waterproof, white marker pen. You can buy those in any DIY store. Go for a walk on the beach and collect driftwood branches and stones, and add a few bottles as well. Now you’re ready for a couple of hours of coziness and creativity. Anette painted various patterns on the stones but you can also write words such as "Welcome", "Summer" or "Love" on them, or you can write names on the stones and use them as place cards. Stepping into this greenhouse – which was constructed by Anne and Uffe next to their fantastic summer home – is nothing but pure coziness and nostalgia. It’s no longer used as a greenhouse but more as an extra room and an orangery for geraniums. Here, the couple enjoys nature all year round and the place is even nice and warm on cold days if the sun has been shining. The furnishings include a cozy dining area and lots of geraniums and aromatic geraniums – Anne’s favorite flowers. In a charming beach town by the inlet of Mont Saint-Michel, you’ll find this beautiful and elegant brick house from the 18th century. It’s been carefully renovated by the owners Marie and Morgan. The building from the 1800s had not been changed much during the last decades and that was clearly an advantage. The most important renovation work included designing the loft, creating a bathroom and exchanging all the external doors and frames. The renovation work lasted for nine months. Before they started, Marie already had some very clear interior design ideas. Marie’s and Morgan’s professional lives have always required them to move around a lot so Marie had already furnished several homes and had grown tired of colors. You can almost still hear the horses’ hooves and the creaking horse carriage when you walk through the gate at the old farm "Rindebækgård" in the village of Voldtofte, Funen, in Denmark. This original farm with timber framing and a yard in the middle was one of the copyhold farms belonging to the estate called "Frederiksgave", now known as "Hagenskov Gods". Back then, it belonged to the royal family, and it’s definitely an important piece of history. Today, only the main building and a few of the barns still exist. In the local history archive, this farm dates all the way back to the 1650s, although it says 1735 in the land registration database. We’re always surrounded by all kinds of chemicals. In particular, cleaning detergents can contain lots of chemicals that are harmful to the environment and to us. Therefore, it’s a good idea to make such detergents yourself. It’s quite simple and very cheap. Let me show you a few of the recipes here. TOOTHPASTE: Homemade toothpaste is mainly for fun. Whereas it’s important to use fluoride toothpaste every day, you can save a bit by using the homemade one now and again. De Wolfe was a pioneer for the, now famous, "light and airy" way of creating a beautiful home. This is also the principle behind the interior design in Ellen Sharpe’s home in Stoneham, Massachusetts. Cecilie goes all in when it comes to both recycling and pastel shades. Five years ago, the family of four fell in love with this small house, located in the area of Dalbybugten by the town of Kerteminde in Denmark. The house is located right by the water and offers the most amazing view. The house itself is an old-style, traditionally Danish summer cottage: made of wood, painted black and featuring white windows. When the family bought the house, they kept most of the existing furniture. They painted the furniture in the most wonderful pastel shades and combined it with cute cushions in flowery pastel colors. This is an authentic summer home that has been carefully renovated, and the most important aspect is that everything can be used. Here you can lead a simple life and the atmosphere oozes of cold buttermilk soup and other typical, Danish grandma dishes. Once when Marianne went for a walk with her dog, she encountered an empty plot of land featuring the most amazing surroundings. This turned into the project of building the dream house for Jens and Marianne. They designed the house themselves, focusing on the view and on the needs of their family of five. Jens is a carpenter so the couple constructed the house themselves as well. The house measures 1,044 sqft (97 sqm). Initially, it was supposed to be a bit wider but as the municipality didn’t want to make an exemption on the legally required distance to the neighbor, the couple had to reduce the house design by 6.6 ft (2 m). Linda would like to show you a few examples of some of her favorite seasonal flowers. They’re all white or completely light-coloured. Some of the ones that she’d like to highlight include "Lindheimer’s clockweed", an absolute favorite in the summer garden. This flower is so cute and easy to maintain, and it features small, white flowers mixed with pink-red stripes. It blossoms the entire summer long and grows very fast. It looks great in bouquets, for example along with peonies. The combination of heavy and light flowers is true magic. The rose "charmant" is always beautiful and this is one of Linda’s favorite roses. The same goes for "white kahala", a fantastic, double garden rose – almost like a dream. Mette and Jens fulfilled their lifelong dream last autumn when they greeted the first guests in their very own café. Having been collecting and keeping furniture and decoration items for a long time, they were able to furnish the place in a cozy and very personal way, using nothing but old furniture. Jens made some wooden panel walls that were painted white just like in a beach hotel. Small partitions between the tables add a cozy atmosphere and a bit of privacy for the visitors. In July, the garden is simple amazing and lavish with all its flowers, and many of the presprouting flowers are now in full bloom. The small, fine, blue flowers are Chinese forget-me-not. The blue handcart is great to take along when you go for a walk to pick lots of flowers, for example for Jane’s workshops, and this is the perfect season for that. The bouquet has been made with cosmos apricotta, lathyrus/sweet peas, European larkspur, wild carrot and other plants that have been combined to create an unruly summer bouquet. The light-purple flowers are the fine European larkspur called "misty lavender". Orange tickseed looks fine and light in bouquets, stretches over the edge and adds a lavish feel to your garden beds.
