How well do you actually know the magazine that you’re reading right now? You probably know that this is a Danish lifestyle magazine but did you also know that we’re a private company and that we publish the magazine ourselves? We don’t belong to a big company group. We enjoy producing the magazine and we do most of the work ourselves. We just love furnishing, cooking, laying beautiful tables, making flower bouquets and trying out big and small DIY projects. We do have a couple of trained, professional graphic designers here at the editorial office who are in charge of the lay-out and all the practical stuff, including translation and printing. Foreground is the part of the picture closest to the camera. The background is the part in the back and the middle ground is everything in between. Very often, the most important elements must be placed in the middle ground. Foreground and background are used as "wrapping". The family that we’re visiting here moved to Ærø in the summer of 2016 after having planned a change for four years. They wanted to find the perfect little paradise and at the same time, they weren’t sure whether to leave Copenhagen where their wonderful colleagues, friends and family were just around the corner. Still, they were dreaming of having a workshop, a vegetable garden, some old apple trees and lots of nature on the doorstep – and a building project. Karin lives with her husband and their four children in a beautiful, renovated house from 1801 in Lieren/Oosterhuizen in the Netherlands. Karin and her grandfather bought the farm back in 2004 but the entire farm has belonged to her since 2012. Karin and her husband have been renovating the place for many years, including every single room in the farmhouse and the outdoor areas. Huge windows offer an incredibly beautiful inflow of light throughout the house where everything has been painted white. Our handyman Ole was visiting some friends who were renovating an old barn. The wood that they were going to get rid of had a fantastic, natural patina and colors in shades of gray, green and silver. The wood was carefully removed and brought back to Ole’s workshop. It was brittle and actually unusable but Ole had an idea on how to put it to use. In a few articles, he’ll show you what he did. WHAT YOU NEED: Old boards, stapler, epoxy, pricker, greaseproof paper. WHAT TO DO: 1: Make a board measuring 4x23.6 inches (10x60 cm) for the bottom and 2 boards measuring 2x20 inches (5x50 cm). The desk in this rustic room was made with old planks. At this age, school becomes more important and a desk is needed. However, it doesn’t have to be an expensive one. A rough looking locker is really cool for clothes. You don’t always have to go far when going on a picnic. If you live in the countryside, you can go on a picnic in your own garden or somewhere in nature close to your home. If you live in a town or city, you can probably easily find a park nearby. Load food, drinks, cushions and plaids in a pushcart – and enjoy a cozy day out! An old metal basket is perfect for making an open fire. Here we’ve hung a hammock in the garden and made a fire in the old metal basket. In my opinion, columbine is one of the finest plants. It’s an old plant and many of us remember it from our grandparents’ garden many, many years ago. In several places in Denmark, you can find these original beach houses by the sea. One such place is Ærø. Seeing these houses is like stepping back into the past. The Danish flag has been raised, the scent of sea roses and salt water fills the air and the tiny, slanting houses are standing there by the edge of the water – right where they’ve always been. If you own such a beach house, you’ve got to fulfil lots of requirements and you’re not allowed to change anything or add running water or electricity. Everything must remain as original as possible. Shari Tipich is a designer and the artist behind this amazing place in the US where the animals that she’s painted on the house actually live side by side with the people. Whilst she was working on her painting, a bear even came by! Shari was allowed to do whatever she wanted with this abandoned shed that had been used for storage for many years. She decided to create a place that everybody would describe as magical. You can almost hear the animals playing their instruments: one plays the tambourine, the other one plays the accordion… The hut has been furnished with colorful flea market finds, old flower paintings and lots of textiles. When you furnish bedrooms for younger children, you can always find a nice, old bed to use. Very often, they’re quite short. Paint the bed in a color that fits to the room and buy a good-quality foam mattress. A small tipi is a great play tent. Most children love hideouts so why not have a permanent one? An old iron bed is also a perfect choice and they’re easy to find. The same goes for old cupboards and dressers which are great for children’s bedrooms – either for clothes or toys. Many teenagers want a black wall and if you make sure that the rest of the room is light, then why not. Most forests in Denmark offer fireplaces and shelters for free and you can find a list of available places on the internet. We loaded all our stuff onto our bikes and went for an evening trip with hot chocolate in the thermos flask, marshmallows in the bag and pillows and covers for the night. HOT CHOCOLATE AND MARSHMELLOWS 4.2 cups (1 l) whole milk, 5.2 oz (150 g) dark chocolate, 1 tbsp sugar, whole meal marie biscuits, Nutella and marshmallows. Break the chocolate into small pieces and pour them into a thermos flask along with sugar. Bring the milk to the boil and pour it into the thermos flask. This fantastic summer home is located by the beach of Stillinge close to the town of Slagelse in Denmark. The owner of the house, Lene Lauridsen, owns the store "Livsstilsboheme" and she rents out her summer cottage. The place has become so popular that Lene and her family rarely have a chance to spend time here. Lene inherited the house from her dad, Otto, and named it after him. She’s got lots of wonderful childhood memories from this place and although Lene and her husband, Jan, have carefully renovated it throughout the years, the soul of the house has been maintained. My name’s Anne-Froukje Mook and I’ve been living in this detached house in Sneek in the Netherlands together with my family for 2 years now. The house is our peaceful and spacious base. Why Ærø? Katrine noticed that Ærø is a place where you can live without ever being in a hurry and she said to Morten: "I think we’re going to visit Ærø." At that time, they weren’t happy with their living situation and everyday life as a family was too hectic. "But that’s an island", Morten said. Off they went and they quickly agreed that Ærø was the perfect place for them. It was beautiful, offered lots of nature and water, and the people on Ærø were welcoming – something that the couple was missing in the city. In Denmark, keeping old trades alive is an important tradition and you can still find passionate people who’re in love with their work. "Sæberiet" in the town of Søby on Ærø is such a place. Until recently, it was owned by Inge Dahl who’s been producing soap and selling it to tourists throughout most of her life but she’s retired now and has sold the place to Susanna Riach from Germany who’s learned all the tips and tricks from Inge. Susanna is welcoming visitors for the first time this year. All the soaps are organic and made from flowers and herbs from the big garden, amongst other things. Marjan and Rudie have been living in this house in Hoogezand for 20 years now. It’s beautifully located in a green area and all the houses were built in the 1930s. Throughout the years, the couple has carried out extensive renovations. They installed a skylight to allow more light to flow into the living room. The painted floors are completely white which Marjan has never regretted even for a second because they make everything seem so light, summery and spacious. The renovations aren’t over yet because this is a never-ending process for most house owners. The style of the house is a mixture of brocante and country living. Making a fire is just so fascinating and looking into the flames and listening to the crackling fire is very calming. If you don’t have a garden where you can make a fire ring, perhaps you can use a fire bowl on the balcony. Making your own concrete fire bowl is very easy.
