This elegant home is hidden away in a suburb of Cape Town. The owner, Bruce Peach, had been living in London for many years before he started to look for a home in town with both a past and a history. Although the house was decayed and needed some serious love and care, Bruce immediately saw the possibilities. He renovated it but kept the original soul of the house intact. The original flooring was sanded down to highlight the beautiful grains and the ceilings were removed to reveal the amazing, hand-cut details. Some of the rooms were opened up completely. Renovating a house with respect for the original details and adding modern conveniences at the same time is a work of art. This is a perfect example of just that.…

We’re visiting Pia who loves recycling treasures. Living alone in this house from 1863, she’s spent the last 4 years renovating the old house with as many recycled materials as possible. This old garden is full of beautiful, old trees and plants that create some natural, small spaces, so you can always find a nice place to enjoy the outdoor life, no matter the weather. In addition, Pia has made her very own little orangery using old windows and other recycled materials. Her friends, children and children-in-law helped her a lot and they enjoy the place just as much as Pia does. By the old mill house, an outdoor space has been created underneath the pergola. Sitting here in the shade, enjoying the view of all the greenery, is simply fantastic. It’s almost like crawling into a cave, and in the evenings, the family enjoys life here with string lights and candles. The furniture’s made of plastic so it can be left outside all year round. It’s also easy to move if you’d like to sit in the sun for a while. An old wash stand with a nice wooden tray on top functions as a table. The free-standing trellises are also easy to move if needed. There’s no way of leaving out the original, romantic "shabby chic" style that many of us still love. It’s perfect for an orangery, a summer cottage or an allotment hut where the airy and light style creates an atmosphere of nostalgia and proper, old-fashioned coziness. RICE PAPER EGG ROLLS 6 pieces of rice paper1 bowl of water A selection of edible flowers1 avocado1 cup of shoots½ cup of red cabbage½ cup of carrots½ cup of sweet pepper Sweet chili sauce WHAT TO DO: Finely chop all the vegetables. Make sure that you’ve got all your ingredients ready for use. Soak a piece of rice paper in the bowl full of water until it’s completely soft. Rikke and Rene have just moved into a quite new, pure style house in a residential area. Rikke is a stylist and works with interior design, and among other things, she’s been working for us here at the editorial office for a few years now. Being a creative woman, Rikke loves the cozy style with recycling furniture, DIY, lots of nice textiles and plants. Obviously, she’s already thought about how she’d like to furnish the minimalist garden. As soon as the weather allows, the family loves spending time outdoors, so they need a large dining area with plenty of space for the entire family, an area with garden recliners for sun-bathing and a lounge area for enjoying the traditional Friday drink. I just love my terrace by the lake. This is my paradise. We constructed the terrace in this exact spot because this is where we’ve got the maximum number of sunny hours on our plot of land. We often sit here in the evenings with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, enjoying the last sunrays of the day. The big trees protect us from the wind. The view of the lake is amazing and we enjoy watching brown trout jumping, the ducks and the birds. In Denmark, the first allotment gardens were created as early as in 1655 but the concept didn’t become widely used until the end of the 1800s. Allotment gardens were set up outside the big, industrial towns because the workers needed a place to stock up on air and light, and to grow vegetables. Already then, an allotment garden was a beloved oasis for town people. Michaela took over her mother’s allotment hut 3 years ago and it’s turned into her paradise where she can recharge and relax. Her big passion is growing organic vegetables and flowers, and that’s a perfect match when you own an allotment garden. When you’re going to furnish a terrace or an orangery, you can try out various styles and they don’t necessarily have to match the style of the indoors of your home. On the next pages, we’ll show you just how big a difference it makes when you experiment with colors and interior. Obviously, you can use our ideas in your living room, too. Our handyman Ole was visiting some friends who were renovating an old barn. The wood that they were going to get rid of had a fantastic, natural patina and colors in shades of gray, green and silver. The wood was carefully removed and brought back to Ole’s workshop. It was brittle and actually unusable but Ole had an idea on how to put it to use. In a few articles, he’ll show you what he did. Being able to create something with flowers is one of the most wonderful gifts ever. This is a statement from Linda Hansson who’s become affiliated to the magazine through her incredibly beautiful and inspirational flower decorations. Here she’s offering you some ideas on how to be creative with marvelous, dusty green colors. She’s made a wonderful summer bouquet with Basella Alba, a perennial creeper, leaves from Silverdust – Senecio cineraria – and Oxypetalum which is a beautiful, white flower with small, dainty flower heads, and a bit of unripe wheat. If you’d like to tie a beautiful bouquet, always remember to choose various types of flowers to achieve contrast. The garden that we’re visiting here is full of exciting, small spaces just waiting for you round the corner. It’s wild but still tamed. It almost takes away your breath when you enter it. The garden’s so beautiful that it’s like stepping into the past. On the day when I was visiting, the garden smelt of "early summer" and the lilacs were still blossoming. This particular aroma makes me think of a carefree childhood in wonderful gardens. This morning, the garden’s full of life and bird songs. Anette lives with her husband, Jacob, and their two daughters in the idyllic town of Mariager in Denmark. Anette has been working for the magazine as a decorator and photographer for a while. Behind the beautiful townhouse is the most amazing, little oasis which Anette has furnished with confidence and a good sense of details. "We live right in the middle of town but we don’t notice that at all when we’re sitting in our completely closed-in yard," Anette explains. The two oldest children have already flown the nest. The house is approximately 25 years old and quite new. The style shown here is very popular – especially among young people. It’s a wonderful offshoot of what we call retro which is based on colors, materials and patterns from the 1960s and 1970s. You add a Japanese touch to your interior design by using shades, mats and furniture made of bamboo, a day bed and some wooden bowls, amongst other things.
