We’ve got lots of traditions in Denmark – not least when it comes to food. When we talk about "grandma food", everyone knows what we’re talking about. These are traditional, Danish dishes that have been passed down through many generations and they’re very popular in Danish restaurants and coffee houses. Preparing these dishes often takes a bit longer but on the other hand, they all have quite intensive tastes. We all associate lots of memories with such dishes and that’s why preparing these articles is so much fun. We attempt to add a modern twist to the food by adding another type of accompaniment than in the original recipe or changing the ingredients a bit. Actually, Mie’s kitchen is an old Ikea kitchen that she’s had for years. She’s given it a makeover by updating it with beautiful tabletops made of white carrara marble, a brass sink and domestic appliances from Siemens. The raw brick walls look amazing in this stylish kitchen and they’re just so trendy right now. If you live in a brick house, all you have to do to get such a rustic wall is to use a hammer to knock off the plaster. That’s what Mie and Claus did. Helle lives with her daughter Klare in the town of Kerteminde on Funen in a very cozy, small semi-detached house. They both love the country style and that’s reflected in the kitchen which is a true country style kitchen full of charm and coziness. The kitchen elements are a cabinet maker kitchen from Dansk Køkkenhåndværk from 2001. It’s made of pure wood and looks almost new. Helle just cleans it with white soap to maintain the white look on the cupboard doors. A brick range hood in the corner adds atmosphere and looks like an old fireplace. In this edition, and throughout 2021, you can watch as Sanne Boer renovates several rooms in her home. Sanne is one of our photographers, she’s 32 years old and she’s been living in Noordbroek, Groningen, in The Netherlands with Anton and their two children, Tess and Gijs, since December 2019. Apart from working as a photographer, Sanne also runs the webshop www.serviesenbrocante.nl. The new house fits Sanne’s taste perfectly; it’s old and it’s got a big garden. Historically, a crisis has always led to positive change. That’s what happened to Michelle Høegh Stjernvik who established "MoodTiles by Michelle Stjernvik" in 2020 during the corona crisis at the age of 34. Michelle has always been very creative, she’s been painting her entire life, she does glass art, she’s taken part in various ceramics classes and she’s attended an art folk school. We’re visiting a family who’s been living in this house in Westeinde in Westerbork, The Netherlands, for more than 7 years. The house was constructed around 1890 and it was a butcher’s store until the 1970s. A large part of the house hadn't been used since then and that was an advantage for the family when they bought it. Everything was original. The walls had lots of strange colors but the house was intact and had beautiful en suite doors, fantastic windows and original beams. The basics were definitely fine. We’re visiting Miranda who lives with her husband Hugo and their three sons in the quiet part of the town of Hilversum in The Netherlands. Miranda’s a graphic designer and she also offers home furnishing consultancy services. The family home is a beautiful, old building that the couple bought in 2003. Back then, the house was completely inhabitable and the family renovated it step by step. Dating back to 1899, the house features many original details such as en suite living rooms, very tall walls and beautiful ceilings. When the couple took over the house, it had no bathroom and no central heating so they had to install that themselves. They also did all the painting and other projects themselves. We’re showing you a kitchen on a budget in a small apartment in the Danish city of Aarhus. Stine wanted a new kitchen but didn’t have much money to spend. The kitchen elements are from Ikea and they’re very simple and features a neutral shade of gray. The old floor planks were also painted light-gray to make them fit to the cupboard doors. The tabletop looks like marble and that’s one of the returning trends right now. Stine added cutting boards and decoration items made of marble and brass, for example the fixture, and glass cupboards. Using glass cupboards instead of closed wall cupboards makes the kitchen seem airier. The glass cupboards have brass edges and they fit perfectly to the brass fixture. We’re visiting Sussi Borup in the Danish town of Gråsten. She lives with her family and their three dogs in a big, old house that they’ve renovated themselves. They bought the house in 2011. The kitchen was renovated big time, including digging up the floor and building a brick wall so that Sussi could finally get her long-awaited mortar washed walls. Measuring no less than 861 ft2 (80 m2), the kitchen is a huge room with enough space for lots of people. The kitchen elements are from Ikea and the tailormade tabletops are made of hard wood. Using wooden cutting boards in the kitchen has been a trend for a long time. Place several cutting boards together, preferably of various sizes, shapes and colors. Tine went to a few markets to look for old cutting boards but you can also buy new cutting boards that you can combine with the old ones or you can just stick to new ones only. Place them in a group, leaning against your kitchen wall. Such cutting boards immediately make you think of the country kitchens of the past where people prepared simple dishes. This time, creative Janne from "Anno 1808" has created some wonderful plaster of Paris reliefs that you can easily make yourself. You need clay, plaster of Paris powder, steel wire or fencing wire for hanging, a selection of leaves, seed heads, flowers and twigs for making imprints, small pieces of lath, wooden fillets for the frame and brown Vintage Paint antique wax for patinating. You’ll also need a rolling pin, nails, a brush, pliers and perhaps an old whisk for mixing the plaster of Paris to avoid lumps. Start by sawing four fillets to fit the desired size of your finished relief. Attach them to each other with small nails. Just like every day in her business, Stine Borup, who owns "Idyl Idyl", also spends lots of time cooking at home. She experiments with new ideas for organic dishes which are later served in her café. She lives on a farm with her husband Lars and their three children, and this is also where she runs her business. The kitchen dates back to the 1970s and it already had a makeover when new doors were attached to the old cupboards. Our handyman Ole was visiting some friends who were renovating an old barn. The wood that they were going to get rid off had a fantastic, natural patina and colors in shades of gray, green and silver. The wood was carefully removed and brought back to Ole’s workshop. It was brittle and actually unusable but Ole had an idea on how to put it to use. In a few articles, he’ll show you what he did. The first thing that Ole made was a plank for serving spring lunch. A good picture often has a sharp cropping that allows plenty of space for whatever you’d like to focus on – the main motif. The rule of thumb is that you should position your main motif slightly to the left or right in the picture. This is a simple method of creating a more interesting picture. In addition, pictures work very well if you’ve got lines that create perspectives, for example corners, edges and horizontal, vertical or slanting lines. You’ll also want to think about front, middle and back. If the picture shows a big part of a room, that means that you don’t want to focus on a specific point or object. If your pots could do with a change, you can easily renew them with Vintage Paint. Pots don’t need any kind of pre-treatment because our paint sticks to more or less all surfaces. Start by painting the entire pot with white paint. Once it’s dry, measure ⅓ up from the bottom and draw a line. Continue by painting the lower part with a color. We used the colors "Chocolate brown", "Olive green" and "Soft beige". You can get these paint products in tins of 3.4 oz (100 ml) each. The Christmas rose (white Christmas rose or hellebore), "Helleborus niger", belongs to the ranunculus family and is an evergreen perennial that grows naturally in the Alps and on the Balkans. In the Nordic countries, Christmas roses are especially cultivated because of their ability to blossom in winter despite of frost and snow. Available in shades of white, viol and rose, they have single or full flower heads. You can use them as ground cover but they also look great in pots at this time of year when most other plants can’t cope with the temperatures.
