Planning this issue was an interesting affair; I had commissioned a›story on Washington, DC from a born and bred Washingtonian, never having covered the US capital before in any depth, and certainly not from an insider’s point of view. One of my favourite stories in this issue is on Armenia, which rocketed to…

Time travel The halcyon days of travel are celebrated in the lush new teNeues title, Nostalgic Journeys: Destinations and Adventures from the Golden Age of Travel (by Stefan Bitterle, $85). Filled with Hollywood icons such as Marlene Dietrich and Audrey Hepburn, the volume explores a time before self-serve check-ins and 40-minute transit turnarounds, when travelling took considerable time and serious effort. Golden Years of Hollywood hotels we still love THE CARLTON HOTEL – As seen in Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief (1955), the hotel, now the InterContinental Carlton Cannes Hotel, is still exquisitely luxurious, retaining much of its Belle Époque splendour.
