“I’ve always absorbed my characters from the outside in. Some were more challenging to take in than others. But in hindsight it’s been fascinating to realise how much I’ve been influenced by the costumes, hair and make-up that’ve helped me come as close to my characters as possible. I got my start in the theatre, and when I arrived on Broadway to play Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, all the clothes were so much more detailed and beautifully made than I’d ever expected. Plant-based and cruelty-free products take top-shelf status in hair colourist SIMON BRIGHT’S kit “People who know me know I love animals, probably even more than I like humans,” says Simon Bright. Three years ago, Bright, who has worked with A-listers such as Gwyneth Paltrow, made the decision to take a more ethical approach to his practice. “With all the technology we have today, it doesn’t seem right to test on animals for the sake of beauty.” As a result, his Sydney-based salon, Jonny + June, is entirely vegan: from the hair dye (Bright favours Faction8 by Pulp Riot) to the cleaning products. “I disagree when people say vegan formulas don’t stand up to traditional products,” he says. “I think they are equally as good or better.”…
