WHEN BALBIR SINGH Seechewal, 54, of Seechewal village in Kapurthala, Punjab, waded into the Kali Bein in 2000, the river was a swirl of sewage from over 100 villages and six towns along its 160km course. Today, the waters of the river, a tributary that originates in the Shivalik foothills and drains into the Beas, are as pristine as when Guru Nanak would have bathed in during his 14yearlong stay at Sultanpur Lodhi in the 15th century.
