This month, our new Wellbeing columnist Harriet Griffey writes about the myth of multitasking. It’s a notion that has been sold to us as a desirable skill; one often attributed to women as we glide seamlessly from role to role throughout the day (supermum, taxi service, businesswoman, personal shopper, life coach, chef, pot wash). Yet, as Harriet explains, “we’re not actually multitasking but switching rapidly between different activities”. And the effect of being constantly on the go? “Multitasking wastes time, increases the possibility of errors and, what’s more, it’s stressful because it requires increased amounts of the stress hormones cortisol and adrenalin to do so.”
